Highway closures of a few hours to a few days are common. The cliff road to Roghi becomes slippery and more dangerous after rain. Do not drive it in wet conditions. Even the footpath can be muddy and less comfortable. Cloud cover reduces the Kinner Kailash views most afternoons. If you visit, build in buffer days and check road conditions before leaving Kalpa.

The Kinnaur highway to Kalpa generally stays open through winter, but the side road to Roghi does not. Do not plan a Roghi visit between late November and March. If you are in Kalpa during winter, enjoy the snow views from town instead.

  1. Get to Roghi: the cliff road or the orchard walk

    About 3 km from Kalpa on the Roghi road, a sharp bend opens onto a sheer vertical drop to the Sutlej gorge. The authorities have built a small viewing platform with railings. The drop is real and stomach churning. Stay behind the railing. Take your photo from a safe distance. The name is dramatic and misleading. This is a viewpoint, not a destination. Five minutes is plenty. Do not lean over edges for photos.

  3. Walk through the village and the orchards

    The village is small enough to walk through in half an hour. Stone and timber houses in the Kinnauri style, carved balconies, slate roofs, narrow lanes.
