You will see numbers ranging from about 325 km to 361 km across different ranking pages. They all use different Chandigarh pickup points, different Manali roads and different Rohtang endpoints.

Reaching Rohtang one way in a day might look possible on paper. But a Chandigarh to Rohtang to Chandigarh same-day trip is not practical. Do not attempt it.

Think about what you are asking of yourself. Driver fatigue over 700-plus km, traffic on the hill roads, permit checks, unpredictable weather, and a fast altitude gain that your body has not adjusted to.

Chandigarh to Rohtang Pass Itinerary for 4 Days and 3 Nights

Day 1: Chandigarh to Manali

Leave Chandigarh early. A morning start gives you a buffer for traffic and daylight for the hill section.

Drive through Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu. Skip the random sightseeing detours on this day. Your only job is to reach Manali in good shape.

Check in, eat a proper dinner, and keep the evening quiet. You have a big couple of days coming.

Day 2: Manali sightseeing and Rohtang preparation

Spend the day on Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht or Mall Road, depending on how much time you have.

This is the day most tourists get wrong. They treat the evening as free time. Instead, use it to confirm your permit category, vehicle details, weather, road status and printed documents. Sorting this the night before saves you a scramble at dawn.

Day 3: Manali to Rohtang Pass and return

Start early. We will not promise you a fixed checkpoint-opening time because it shifts, but an early departure always helps.

Stop at Kothi, Gulaba, Marhi and Rahala Falls, subject to access on the day. Snow activities and snow availability change completely by month and conditions, so do not lock your expectations to what you saw in someone's Instagram reel.

One honest warning here. Rohtang is beautiful, but on a busy day the crowd and the vehicle queues can take the shine off. Reaching early is the only real fix.

Day 4: Manali to Chandigarh

Give yourself a generous time buffer for the drive back.

Do not book a tight train or flight straight after the hill drive. One landslide or one slow stretch near Mandi, and you miss it. We have seen it happen to travellers who cut it too fine.

Relaxed Chandigarh to Manali and Rohtang Itinerary for 5 Days

Use Days 1 to 3 exactly as above.

Day 4: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu

Keep this as its own day rather than cramming it into the Rohtang excursion. Rushing both in one shot ruins both.

Here is a point people constantly confuse. Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass are different routes and different experiences. The tunnel takes you to the Lahaul side and Sissu. It does not take you to Rohtang Top.

Is Rohtang Pass Open in 2026?

A travel update dated 14 July 2026 reported that Rohtang Pass was open to tourists travelling with a valid permit. However, road access can change quickly, especially during the monsoon.

The official Lahaul-Spiti road-status page listed the Delhi-to-Manali and Manali-to-Keylong routes as open on 22 July 2026. This does not automatically confirm uninterrupted tourist access to Rohtang Pass, which is regulated separately.

More than 136 roads across Himachal Pradesh were reported blocked following heavy monsoon rain on 23 July 2026, showing how quickly conditions can change.

Some secondary reports state that Rohtang reopened for tourist traffic on 17 May 2026. Check the official permit portal and district road advisories before leaving Chandigarh, and check them again before departing from Manali.

How Do You Get a Rohtang Pass Permit in 2026?

Official permit website

The official portal is rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. The old .nic.in portal has been replaced, so ignore any blog still pointing you there.

Tourism permit fee

Cars, jeeps and MUVs pay a ₹500 permit fee plus a ₹50 congestion charge. That makes the official total ₹550.

Buses and heavy vehicles pay a total of ₹600.

Permit validity

The tourism permit is valid for one day, for a to-and-fro visit. Plan your Rohtang day around this.

Daily quota

The tourism quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles per day.

The separate Special Rohtang Permit page lists 60 petrol and 40 diesel private vehicles daily, with one permit per vehicle during the season.

Do not assume which category you fall into. Pick the category the official portal shows for your specific vehicle. That is the only version that counts.

Permit-release times

Permits are released at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. You can request them only for the next two days, so time your booking carefully.

Documents

Carry valid ID, valid PUC and your vehicle registration.

The official portal lists a maximum vehicle age of 10 years. The printed permission is compulsory. A screenshot on your phone will not save you at the checkpoint.

Is Rohtang Pass closed on Tuesday?

Several travel pages list Tuesday as Rohtang Pass’s maintenance day, but the live official portal currently shows no maintenance day. Check the official portal before planning a Tuesday visit. 

What Is the Manali Green Tax?

If your vehicle is not registered in Himachal Pradesh, you must pay the Manali Composite Environmental Fund, usually called the green tax.

The current official charge for an LMV is ₹200, valid for seven days.

This is separate from the Rohtang tourism permit. Two different payments, do not mix them up.

Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel and Sissu: Which Is Better?

Rohtang Pass is a high mountain-pass sightseeing spot with restricted vehicle access. You need the permit, and you go for the classic pass views and snow.

Atal Tunnel is how you reach the Lahaul side and Sissu. It does not take you to Rohtang Top. Different road, different day, different feel.

When you have the time, do both as separate day trips. Trying to squeeze them together means you enjoy neither properly.

Rohtang Pass sits at roughly 3,978 metres above sea level. You gain that altitude quickly from Manali, which is where trouble starts for some travellers.
