The official portal currently lists no fixed maintenance day, so do not blindly assume every Tuesday is closed. Always check the live portal and road movement on your own travel morning.

What Has Changed for Rohtang Pass Travellers in 2026?

The official permit portal is now https://rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in/. The old nic.in portal has been retired, and it now just tells you the applications have moved to the new site.

This matters because several high-ranking guides still show old quotas, old prices, old release schedules and the old Tuesday rule. Copy those and you plan around numbers that no longer exist.

Here is a date-stamped fact. The official portal was actively showing permit availability on 25 July 2026.

That does not mean the road will be open on your date. Permit availability and actual road access are two separate things.

We are not promising the pass will stay open. Snow, repair work and traffic controls can shut it with little notice. Check road movement on your own travel morning, every time.

Mistake 1: Assuming Rohtang Is Open Because Manali or Atal Tunnel Is Open

Manali, Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel, Sissu and the old Rohtang road can all have different access conditions on the same day. One being open tells you nothing about the others.

Atal Tunnel passes under the mountain and bypasses Rohtang Pass completely. Driving through the tunnel does not mean you have visited Rohtang.

So confirm three things separately: official permit availability, current road movement, and the highest tourist point actually open that day.

Mistake 2: Using an Old Permit Website or Paying an Unverified Agent

Use only the correct official domain: https://rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in/. Anything else is either outdated or someone else's middleman page.

Understand the limit of what an agent can do. Once the official vehicle slots for a day are gone, no agent can create extra quota. Anyone promising a guaranteed slot after sell-out is promising something the system cannot deliver.

Not every agent is a fraud. Plenty are honest. But you should use the portal's own validation and reprint functions rather than trusting only a forwarded screenshot.

If a permit number does not validate on the official site, it does not help you at the barrier, no matter how real the screenshot looks.

Mistake 3: Applying Too Early, Too Late or at the Wrong Release Time

Regular tourism permits can currently be requested only for the next two days. Try to book a week out and the system simply will not let you.

Permits release at 10:00 and 16:00. The 10:00 release contains 400 petrol and 200 diesel permits. The 16:00 release contains another 400 petrol and 200 diesel permits.

Miss the release window and you are refreshing an empty page while others hold slots.

One thing to be clear about. These are online permit-release times, not road-entry or departure times. Getting a slot at 10:00 does not mean you cross the barrier at 10:00.

Mistake 4: Entering the Wrong Vehicle Details or Forgetting the Printout

The portal lists valid identity proof, a valid PUC certificate and vehicle-registration information among what you need. Enter these carefully.

The portal currently says the vehicle must not be more than ten years old. An older vehicle can be turned away no matter what you paid.

Permit details that do not match your documents can get the vehicle stopped right at the barrier. One wrong digit in the registration number is enough to ruin the morning.

The portal calls a printed copy compulsory. Carry the printout.

Keep a digital backup on your phone too, but do not treat the digital copy as a replacement for the printout. Carry both.

Mistake 5: Assuming Rohtang Is Always Closed on Tuesday

Many older articles repeat a permanent Tuesday-maintenance rule as if it is fixed law. It is not currently fixed.

When we checked, the official portal displayed "NONE" for the maintenance day.

The Tuesday restrictions people saw in May 2026 were temporary road-repair measures, and they ran only until 19 May 2026. Temporary is the key word.

Do not cancel a Tuesday trip on an old blog's say-so. Verify the live portal and the local order for your exact date.

Mistake 6: Booking a Taxi Without a Written, Itemised Quote

A verbal quote is where most trouble starts. Get it in writing, and get it itemised.

A proper written quote should define the vehicle category, total price, permit handling, whether the government charge is included, congestion charge, parking, driver allowance, waiting time, route and included stops.

Be very clear on one point. Does the quote cover only Manali to Rohtang and back, or does it also include Solang Valley, Koksar, Atal Tunnel or Sissu? Those are different trips at different prices.

Mistake 7: Letting the Route or Stops Change Without Agreeing on the New Price

There is a real difference between returning straight down the Rohtang road and looping via Koksar, Atal Tunnel and Solang, when that route is legally open and included.

That loop is a longer, different trip. If it was not in your written quote, it can become an add-on charge at the end.

Ask upfront what happens if police shorten the route or the pass closes after you have already left. These calls get made on the ground, not by you.

Settle in writing whether an alternative route costs extra, replaces part of the original plan, or triggers a partial adjustment. And know this: we cannot promise every alternative route will be open on your day either.

Mistake 8: Believing Snow Dresses and Boots Are Compulsory

Snow suits and boots are not listed among the official permit requirements. Nowhere on the permit does it say you must rent one.

Useful and legally compulsory are not the same thing. That difference is where money leaks.

Waterproof boots or a good outer layer can genuinely help when there is active snow, deep slush or wet ground. But a full rented suit is not automatically necessary.

If someone tells you every tourist gets fined for not renting a snow suit, treat that as a warning sign. It is an optional service presented as compulsory unless the seller can show you an identifiable current government order.

Mistake 9: Renting Snow Gear Before Checking the Actual Conditions

Check the live snow, temperature and ground conditions before you decide anything. A "snow point" can be dry, patchy or dirty depending on the week.

You can rent only the item you actually need. Just boots. Just gloves. Just an outer layer. You do not have to take the full bundle.

Before you pay, inspect the fit, the zips, the sole grip, the cleanliness and any existing damage. Confirm the per-person price, the deposit, the return location and the return time.

A starting benchmark of around ₹250 per person shows up in traveller and operator material, but it is not an official tariff. Date, shop, quality and included items all change the price.

Mistake 10: Buying an Activity Bundle Without Asking the Duration and Final Price

Skiing, sledging, tube rides, snow scooters and photography are all optional and separately operated. They are not part of any permit or taxi fare.

Before you agree to anything, ask for the individual price, the duration, the ride distance or number of turns, the equipment, the instructor time and the cancellation terms.

Mistake 11: Leaving Manali Late or Treating the Return Time as Fixed

Rohtang Pass is about 51 kilometres from Manali. On a map that looks like a quick hop. It is not.

Permit checks, narrow mountain roads, traffic, weather and temporary controls can stretch that short distance into a long outing.

Some traveller reports mention waits of more than an hour, and in extreme peak-season cases, several hours. Those are individual experiences, not normal or guaranteed travel times.

We will not hand you a universal "leave at 4:00 AM" rule, because the right time depends on that day's traffic plan.

Confirm the permitted movement and a realistic pickup time with your operator the evening before, then again in the morning.

Mistake 12: Expecting Guaranteed Snow or Fresh Snowfall

Not all snow is the same. There is active snowfall, older deposited snow, tall snow walls, roadside patches, and dirty late-season snow that photographs badly.

An open pass does not guarantee fresh snowfall or snow that is good for any particular activity. Plenty of visitors arrive expecting a fresh white blanket and find hard, grey patches instead.

So value the drive and the high-pass scenery on their own. The road up, the valley views and the sheer altitude are worth the trip even on a low-snow day.

We never guarantee snow for a specific month or date, and you should be careful of anyone who does.

Mistake 13: Confusing Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel and Sissu

These three get mixed up constantly. Rohtang Pass is reached over the old high mountain road, up and over the top.

Atal Tunnel passes under the Pir Panjal range and takes you toward Lahaul without climbing the pass at all.

Sissu is a separate destination on the Lahaul side, past the tunnel. It is its own place, not a part of Rohtang.

Mistake 14: Ignoring Altitude, Cold, Motion Sickness and Fatigue

Rohtang Pass sits at about 3,978 metres. That is high enough for altitude to affect people who feel perfectly fine at sea level.

Watch for the early signs: headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue and loss of appetite. These are recognised altitude-illness symptoms.

Right after you arrive, move gently and avoid unnecessary exertion. Sprinting up a snow slope for a photo is exactly the wrong first move.

If Rohtang is the main reason for your holiday, keep a buffer day. One shot at a pass that can close on you is a fragile plan.

Have a Plan B ready: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu when permitted, or simple Manali local sightseeing.

Run a quick check the evening before, and you save yourself most of the next morning's arguments. Start with the latest road status and whether the pass is moving.

Then confirm your permit validity and that the vehicle number on the permit matches the actual taxi. Make sure the printed permit is in hand, not just on a phone.

Get the driver's contact and the pickup time locked. Reconfirm what the taxi fare includes, so nobody is surprised at the end of the day.

Talk through the likely snow conditions and make your clothing decision based on that, not on a shop's sales pitch. Finally, agree on your Plan B in case the pass shuts.
