Most Loved Spiti Valley Bike Expedition With Chandratal

Arrive Manali by morning and freshen up. After breakfast, your bike is allocated based on your tier (Himalayan 411cc or 450cc upgrade) and riding gear is fitted. The road captain gives a full safety briefing at 11 AM covering routes, riding rules for the Himalayas, hand signals, and group formation. Your first ride takes you from Manali to Jibhi via the Kullu Valley, cruising alongside the Beas River through pine laden landscapes. This is your warm up day to feel the bike and meet the crew you will ride with for the next week.

Your first proper riding day. Climb to Jalori Pass at 10,000 ft through narrow roads and steep switchbacks, then descend through apple orchards and villages built from mud, wood, and stone. Cross the mighty Sutlej River and ride onto the smooth highway towards Rampur. After Rampur the real adventure begins on the iconic cliffhanger roads of Kinnaur Valley. Stop at the Kinnaur Rock Gate for a group shot but stay sharp because the mountains are alive with falling rocks. As you approach Karcham Dam the wide highway transforms into a single lane road hugging the mountainside. End the day in the serene Sangla Valley. This is the day you earn your riding stripes.

This is your acclimatisation day by design. Short ride, massive views, and your body adjusts before the big Spiti push tomorrow. Stroll through Sangla's apple orchards in the morning then ride alongside the pristine blue Baspa River towards Chitkul at 11,320 ft. This is the last inhabited village before the Indo Chinese border. Soak it in with a coffee overlooking the village, a walk down to the river, and a visit to the local temple. Ride to Kalpa for sunset with the Kinnaur Kailash range as backdrop. One of those views that does not need a filter.

This is the day Spiti begins and it is the biggest riding day of the trip. Wake up to Kinnaur Kailash glistening in the morning light and start early. The smooth roads to Pooh will have you itching to open up the throttle but these winding roads come with surprises so control that urge. Watch the landscape shift dramatically as green disappears and stark barren mountains take over. At Khab the Sutlej and Spiti rivers converge marking the gateway to the cold desert. Climb to Nako Lake at 12,000 ft, visit the 500 year old preserved mummy at Gue Monastery (teeth and hair still intact), explore Tabo Monastery (the Ajanta of the Himalayas), and stop at Dhankar Fort perched impossibly above the valley. Reach Kaza by evening and walk through Old Kaza for buckthorn juice or thukpa. Nako, Gue, Tabo, Dhankar, and Kaza in one day.

Every stop today is a milestone. Ride to Key Monastery at 13,500 ft, the oldest school of monks in the country perched above the Spiti River. Cross to Chicham via Kibber for Asia's highest suspension bridge with all the chills and thrills you need. Post a postcard home from the world's highest post office at Hikkim (14,567 ft). It might take months to arrive but it is the thought that counts. Ride to Komic at 15,500 ft, the highest motorable village in the world, and try local delicacies at the highest restaurant on Earth. Finish at Langza with its giant Buddha statue and fields full of marine fossils from when this was an ocean millions of years ago. Sip ginger lemon tea with almonds and apricots at a local cafe. This is the bucket list day.

Ride towards the crescent shaped Chandratal Lake at 14,100 ft. Pass through the last villages of Spiti, then ride along the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary on dirt trails with water crossings and hairpin turns that challenge every bit of your riding skill. After Losar a smooth tarred road welcomes you but do not get comfortable. Climb to Kunzum La at 15,060 ft for a moment to catch your breath and pay homage at Kunzum Mata Temple for a blessing of safe passage. Descend on a narrow path towards Chandratal with barely enough space for one vehicle. Park at the last motorable point and hike 2 km to witness the Moon Lake. Check into your lakeside camp, have a warm supper under the starlit sky, and look up. The Milky Way from Chandratal is the night people talk about for years. The lake, the stars, the silence, the cold that bites, and the memories that keep you warm.

Sunrise at Chandratal one last time. You felt the cold, the thin air, the challenge of camping at high altitude. But this morning the sunrise makes every hardship worth it. After breakfast saddle up for the final stretch back to Manali. Navigate the narrow one lane road back to the highway, then descend on broken rocky paths towards the legendary Chacha Chachi Dhaba, the last lifeline in this frozen landscape. Some of the most thrilling off roading of the tour with boulders and river stones around every corner. Ride through the Atal Tunnel, all 9 kilometres cutting through the Pir Panjal range. Reach Manali by evening, drop off bikes, and the riding is done. Old Manali cafe crawl followed by a celebration dinner swapping stories from the road. From conquering mountain passes to forging lasting friendships, tonight is all about celebrating the ride of a lifetime. The ride is done. The bond is not.

Morning free to explore Manali. Visit Hadimba Temple built in 1553 in a clearing among ancient deodars, walk Mall Road, or sit in a cafe and let the whole trip sink in. Group photo session and farewell with the team in the afternoon. Board the overnight Volvo to Delhi with a bag full of memories and stories you will be telling for a long time.
