October, with selected early-November departures released only after Travel Coffee reviews the road surface, weather, operating stays, and motorcycle conditions for the batch
Ideal For
Competent geared-motorcycle riders comfortable with cold weather, long mountain riding days, high altitude, and weather-led changes to the plan. This is not a learn-to-ride expedition

Know Before You Go

  • This is a supported late-season Kinnaur and Spiti motorcycle expedition, planned primarily for October. Selected early-November departures are opened only after Travel Coffee reviews the road surface, weather, operating stays, and motorcycle conditions for that batch. It is better understood as a late-season expedition than a winter bike trip
  • This is not a learn-to-ride expedition. A valid motorcycle licence is mandatory for every rider, and you should already be comfortable with geared motorcycles, clutch control, hill starts, hairpin bends, downhill braking, slow-speed balance, and riding for several hours. You do not need previous Spiti experience, but you do need motorcycle competence. Previous experience on a similar-sized motorcycle is strongly recommended for solo riders
  • October is a transition season, and an open road does not automatically mean an open bike trip. Cars and 4x4s have different traction from motorcycles, so fresh snow, frozen water, or black ice can make Travel Coffee stop motorcycle movement even when other vehicles are still travelling. Black ice can be hard to see on shaded sections and bridge approaches, and the road captain may deliberately ride much slower than you expect. Please do not pressure the crew to ride faster because a maps app suggests a shorter time
  • Your convoy is always led, and the ride lead sets and assigns the riding order and guides you throughout. On larger convoys, from about 8 to 10 bikes upward, a dedicated marshal rides with the group. On micro and small groups, your trip coordinator takes this role. Ride in your assigned position, hold the convoy spacing, and follow the lead's hand signals and pace. In the day-by-day plan this ride lead is referred to as the road captain
  • We do not plan routine night riding. Stages are built around usable daylight, and if weather, checkpoint formalities, road work, or another delay takes too long, sightseeing is shortened before the group is pushed into night riding. There is no universal departure time; the team weighs temperature, sunlight, surface ice, distance, and daylight before deciding each day's start
  • Lepcha La, also known as Hangrang Pass, is a planned attempt, not a guarantee. It is a sensitive border-area route, and access depends on security permission, road surface, weather, local instructions, and the road captain's motorcycle assessment. If the group cannot visit, it continues towards Tabo and Kaza. No refund should be expected simply because a conditional sightseeing point becomes inaccessible, subject to the applicable booking terms
  • Day 7 is planned as the full Kaza high-village circuit, covering Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim, and Komic, ridden without your main luggage. The exact sequence and individual stops remain subject to motorcycle-safe road conditions, weather, daylight, and the road captain's assessment, and a stretch may be shortened or adjusted if it becomes unsafe. Chitkul on Day 4 and Dhankar on Day 6 are also planned but condition dependent, and Dhankar is secondary to Lepcha La and Tabo, added only when time, daylight, and road conditions allow
  • This route deliberately leaves out Gue Mummy, Pin Valley, Chandratal, Batal, Kunzum Pass, the Manali to Kaza crossing, and the Dhankar Lake trek. Please do not book expecting these
  • The backup vehicle carries luggage, tools, essential spares, and expedition equipment, and provides emergency support where practical. It is not a guaranteed passenger seat for every rider who decides not to ride. If you become unwell, injured, or unable to ride, the road captain assesses the safest practical arrangement based on available space and the situation
  • Rental motorcycles are allotted in Shimla on Day 2 at a hotel near the allotment zone, usually near Shimla ISBT, where the day-use freshen up is in a common area with no dedicated room or shower and is often time bound. At allotment, every rider signs the Travel Coffee riding agreement, submits their driving licence, and pays a ₹10,000 refundable security deposit per rental motorcycle, which is separate from the trip price. Inspect the bike with the team and make sure any existing marks or damage are recorded before you accept it. Bikes are returned in Shimla on Day 9, and the deposit is refunded after the bike is inspected without chargeable damage
  • Riding gear provided is an ISI certified helmet, knee guards, elbow guards, and gloves, subject to available sizes. A riding jacket is not included; you can bring your own, or a Level 2 riding jacket can be arranged for ₹2,500 for the full trip on request. Riding trousers and boots are also not included
  • Own Bike Own Fuel riders must bring a properly serviced, legally documented, route-suitable motorcycle with valid RC, insurance, and licence, and buy their own fuel. The mechanic may assist, but Travel Coffee is not responsible for pre-existing defects or poor maintenance on a guest's own motorcycle. The standard own-bike package runs Shimla to Shimla unless another service is added
  • The travelling mechanic gives routine expedition support and daily basic checks, but not every failure can be fixed on the roadside. If a motorcycle cannot continue safely, recovery of the rider and bike takes priority over keeping the person in the saddle. Accidental rider-caused damage remains chargeable under the rental damage policy
  • Fuel for the published route is included on rental-bike packages. Follow the road captain's refuelling plan and do not skip a fuel stop just because the gauge still shows fuel. Own Bike Own Fuel riders buy their own fuel
  • Dual Rider options run only on the motorcycles and departures where they are operationally approved. The rider must already be comfortable controlling the bike with a passenger, and the pillion should be comfortable with long riding days, cold, and altitude. Main luggage goes in the support vehicle, not on the pillion's back
  • Use one soft duffel or rucksack rather than a trolley suitcase, and keep what you need during the riding day with you: medicines, water, spare gloves and a warm layer, rain and wind protection, documents, phone, power bank, and small snacks
  • The route climbs through Narkanda and Sangla before the higher Nako and Kaza stages, and that is still a significant altitude journey. Nako is the first particularly high sleeping halt, so keep activity easy after arrival. Report symptoms early, especially a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, breathlessness, difficulty walking, or confusion, and do not hide them because you want to ride the next morning. Portable oxygen is emergency support, not a replacement for acclimatisation, medical care, or descent when needed
  • Anyone with a significant cardiac or respiratory condition, previous severe altitude illness, or another relevant medical condition should consult a doctor before booking
  • Spiti is remote. Kaza has a Community Health Centre and other settlements have only basic facilities, so specialist care is far and weather can delay reaching help. Carry your prescription medicines with spare supplies, do not depend on finding specific medication en route, and choose travel and medical insurance that covers high altitude, motorcycle riding, and evacuation, since road or air evacuation cannot be promised on demand. Medical treatment, hospitalisation, oxygen use, and evacuation are charged separately
  • As the season winds down, some businesses close. Stays may be hotels, guest houses, or homestays operating for the departure. Do not expect central heating throughout. Electric blankets or room heaters may be available at some properties, depending on electricity and property policy, and hot water arrangements vary. By early November, freezing temperatures can occasionally affect plumbing at higher stops. The actual facilities of your confirmed stays are shared before departure
  • Breakfast and dinner are included on the meal plan, simple warm food from local kitchens based on what is available. Lunch is taken during the riding day and paid directly, so budget for lunches, tea, and snacks. Tell the team about food allergies and important dietary needs before payment, and carry your own energy bars, dry fruit, chocolate, electrolytes, and preferred riding snacks. Food stops are thin on some stretches, and on the Lepcha La day there are no reliable options between Nako, Sumdo, and Lepcha La, so eat a full breakfast at Nako and carry packed snacks and water, with the first proper meal stop at Tabo
  • Mobile network becomes unreliable on remote sections, and UPI and card payments depend on the same connectivity, so carry emergency cash for food, personal expenses, and possible delays, and keep important contacts and documents available offline. ATMs are unreliable past Reckong Peo
  • Electricity is generally available at inhabited stops but can be interrupted, and cold drains phones, cameras, and power banks faster. Charge whenever reliable power is available and keep spare batteries and power banks relatively warm
  • Pack full riding gear and real cold-weather clothing, because ordinary city winter clothing is not enough for a cold late-season riding day at altitude. Bring a full-face helmet, a riding jacket with protection, riding gloves, riding trousers or knee protection, riding boots or sturdy ankle-covering footwear, a waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer, thermals, a fleece or down layer, warm inner gloves, warm socks, a beanie, and a neck warmer, plus sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and an insulated water bottle
  • Fresh snowfall is not guaranteed, and a snowy photo from another batch does not promise the same on your dates. We also do not promise snow-covered villages, frozen waterfalls, frozen lakes, clear skies, or perfect stargazing. Fresh snow can actually reduce motorcycle access, and you should never ride or walk onto a frozen lake or river because the surface looks solid
  • We plan the expedition carefully and still expect the mountains to have the final say. Travel Coffee may change the sightseeing order, skip a side road, change the departure time, stop motorcycle movement, alter an overnight halt, use an accessible alternative, or arrange rider or motorcycle recovery. This is how a late-season motorcycle expedition should be run
  • Road clearance or weather can occasionally delay the journey, and the Day 9 Volvo depends on the group reaching Shimla in time. The overnight Volvo is generally scheduled around 20:30 or later depending on the operating service, and final reporting and departure details are shared for your batch. Keep extra time after the scheduled Delhi return, and do not book a tight flight, train, exam, or important commitment right after. Foreign passport holders must contact Travel Coffee before booking, since Protected Area Permit requirements apply on parts of the Kinnaur to Spiti route and Lepcha La lies in a sensitive border region that should not be assumed accessible to foreign travellers. Carry a valid government photo ID for every traveller

Frequently Asked Questions

When does this expedition depart?

Friday evening from Delhi on the published dates, and the motorcycle journey begins from Shimla the next morning. It is planned primarily for October, with selected early-November departures released only after an operational review of the road, weather, and stays.

Is this a winter Spiti bike trip?

It is better understood as a late-season Kinnaur and Spiti motorcycle expedition. October is a transition season, colder in the mornings with less predictable village roads, and by early November conditions can turn increasingly winter-like. For a motorcycle expedition that distinction matters, which is why the plan stays weather-led.

Is Lepcha La guaranteed?

The attempt is part of the itinerary, but the visit itself is not guaranteed. Lepcha La, also known as Hangrang Pass, is a sensitive border-area route, and access depends on security permission, road conditions, weather, and the road captain's motorcycle assessment. If the group cannot visit, it continues towards Tabo and Kaza, and no refund should be expected simply because a conditional point becomes inaccessible.

Do I need to be an experienced rider?

Yes. This is not a learn-to-ride expedition. You need a valid motorcycle licence and should already be comfortable with geared bikes, clutch control, hill starts, hairpins, downhill braking, and long riding days. You do not need previous Spiti experience, but you do need motorcycle competence. Previous experience on a similar-sized bike is strongly recommended for solo riders.

Who leads the ride, and how is the riding order decided?

Every convoy is led. On larger convoys, from about 8 to 10 bikes upward, a dedicated marshal rides with the group. On micro and small groups, your trip coordinator takes this role. The ride lead assigns the riding order and guides you throughout, so ride in your assigned position, hold the spacing, and follow the hand signals and pace. In the day-by-day plan this ride lead is referred to as the road captain.

Is a riding jacket included, and what riding gear do I get?

An ISI certified helmet, knee guards, elbow guards, and gloves are included, subject to available sizes. A riding jacket is not included. If you want one, a Level 2 riding jacket can be arranged for ₹2,500 for the full trip on request, or you are welcome to bring your own jacket. Riding trousers and boots are also not included.

Which motorcycles can I choose?

Himalayan 411, Himalayan 440, or Himalayan 450, subject to fleet confirmation for your dates, or Own Bike Own Fuel if you bring a suitable, serviced, documented motorcycle. Solo and Dual configurations are offered where operationally approved. Your confirmed bike, rider configuration, and final price are shown in the booking confirmation.

Can I bring my own motorcycle?

Yes, with the Own Bike Own Fuel option. You buy your own fuel, and your bike must arrive properly serviced, legally documented, and suitable for the route, with valid RC, insurance, and licence. The standard own-bike package runs Shimla to Shimla unless another service is added. The mechanic may assist, but Travel Coffee is not responsible for pre-existing defects on a guest's own bike.

What room sharing options are there?

Triple or Double sharing. There is no quad option. Single occupancy may be requested at the applicable supplement, subject to availability.

What is the security deposit?

A ₹10,000 refundable security deposit is collected per rental motorcycle, separate from the trip price. Inspect the bike with the team on Day 2 so any existing marks are recorded before you accept it. The deposit is refunded after the bike is returned and inspected without chargeable damage. Own Bike riders do not pay a rental deposit.

Is Chitkul guaranteed?

Chitkul is planned on your Baspa valley day, but it is road dependent. Later in the season the Chitkul section can be affected by frost, ice, fresh snow, or restrictions, and if the road is unsuitable for motorcycles the road captain turns the group around at the safest practical point and covers the best accessible part of the upper valley instead.

What do we cover around Kaza?

Day 7 is planned as the full high-village circuit around Kaza, covering Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham Bridge, Langza, Hikkim, and Komic, before returning to Kaza, and it is ridden without your main luggage. The road captain sets the most practical sequence on the day and, as on any high-altitude motorcycle day, may shorten or adjust a stretch if road, snow, ice, weather, or daylight make it unsafe.

Are Gue, Pin Valley, and Chandratal included?

No. This route deliberately leaves out Gue Mummy, Pin Valley, Chandratal, Batal, Kunzum Pass, the Manali to Kaza crossing, and the Dhankar Lake trek. It is a Kinnaur and Spiti loop that returns through Kalpa and Shimla.

Is the backup vehicle a seat if I do not want to ride?

No. The backup vehicle carries luggage, tools, spares, and expedition equipment and gives emergency support where practical. It is not a guaranteed passenger seat for a rider who simply chooses not to ride. If you become unwell, injured, or unable to ride, the road captain arranges the safest practical option based on available space.

How high is Nako, and why does it matter?

Nako is your first particularly high sleeping halt, and the route climbs steadily to it and then to Kaza. Keep activity easy after arriving, and tell the road captain at once about any headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, or breathlessness. Do not hide symptoms because you want to ride the next morning. Portable oxygen is carried for emergencies and does not replace acclimatisation or descent.

What meals are included?

8 breakfasts (Day 2 to Day 9) and 7 dinners (Day 2 to Day 8), simple warm food from local kitchens. Lunches, snacks, and drinks are on your own during the riding day and paid directly. Tell the team about allergies and dietary needs before payment.

Can I freshen up or stay an extra night in Shimla on Day 9?

Yes, on request and subject to availability. After you reach Shimla and hand the bike back on Day 9, an optional freshen-up or day-use arrangement can be booked at extra cost. If you would rather not board the overnight Volvo the same night, an additional overnight stay in Shimla can also be arranged at extra cost, and any change to your onward transport then follows that add-on. Neither is part of the base package price.

Will mobile network and UPI work?

Coverage becomes unreliable on remote sections, and UPI and card payments depend on the same connectivity, so carry emergency cash. ATMs are unreliable past Reckong Peo, so Reckong Peo is your last dependable chance to withdraw cash.

Do foreign nationals need anything special?

Yes. Foreign passport holders must contact Travel Coffee before booking. Protected Area Permit requirements apply on parts of the Kinnaur to Spiti route, and Lepcha La lies in a sensitive border region that should not be assumed accessible to foreign travellers. Travel Coffee confirms the permitted route for the traveller's nationality before accepting the booking.

What happens if bad weather changes the plan?

The road captain works with the real conditions. The sightseeing order may change, a side road may be skipped, the departure time or overnight halt may move, or motorcycle movement may be stopped. Safety and reaching each night's halt in daylight take priority over completing every listed point.
