What makes it special

Sonamarg is the wildest of Kashmir's big four destinations. If Srinagar is the lake, Gulmarg is the gondola, and Pahalgam is the valleys, Sonamarg is the glacier. The town sits at about 2,740 metres on the Srinagar to Leh Highway, roughly 80 km from Srinagar, in a wide valley where the Sindh River runs fast and clear through meadows backed by snow covered peaks. The name means "Meadow of Gold," and in June, when the wildflowers come out and the afternoon sun hits the grass at the right angle, you understand why.

The main draw is the Thajiwas Glacier, about 3 km from town, reachable by a short walk or a pony ride through pine forest. The glacier holds snow year round, which means you can touch real ice in July while standing in a meadow full of flowers. That contrast is why most families come. The other big attraction is Zero Point, up near the Zoji La pass about 25 km from town, a vast snow expanse at around 3,500 metres. Both require union taxis from the Sonamarg bazaar. Your Srinagar cab cannot take you on either route.

Here is the honest framing. Sonamarg is more raw than the other Kashmir destinations. The town itself is small, with basic accommodation and limited restaurants. The lower section of the Thajiwas Glacier trail has vendor stalls, litter, and pony handlers competing for your business. The magic starts once you walk past that first stretch. The upper glacier area, the Sindh River bank, and the meadow at sunset when the day trippers have left are genuinely special. But if you are expecting the polish of a Gulmarg hotel or the cultural depth of Srinagar, adjust your expectations.

The Z-Morh Tunnel, which opened in early 2025, has changed access significantly. Sonamarg was previously a summer only destination, closed from November to April when snow blocked the road. The 6.5 km tunnel now allows year round vehicle access to the town from Srinagar. Winter visitors can reach Sonamarg, but the glacier trek and Zero Point remain inaccessible in deep winter due to snow.

Most travellers visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar. That works, but you lose the evening. The sunset here, when the valley catches the last light and the peaks go from white to gold to pink, is something the day trip crowd never sees. One night changes the experience. If you are camping by the Sindh River, one night is the minimum.

    The standard approach. Leave Srinagar via Ganderbal and follow the Sindh River valley through Kangan to Sonamarg. The road is well surfaced and the drive along the Sindh is one of the most scenic stretches in Kashmir. The Z-Morh Tunnel (opened early 2025) near the end of the route has made this road accessible year round. Private taxis from Srinagar cost approximately Rs 3,500 to 4,500 for a return day trip. Shared taxis available from TRC bus stand.

Most Leh to Srinagar travellers stop at Sonamarg for a break or a night before continuing.

In deep winter (December to February), the town is quiet and snow covered, the glacier trail is closed, and Zero Point is inaccessible.   1. Thajiwas Glacier trek or pony ride

    2 to 4 hours round trip

    The signature experience. A 3 km trail from the Sonamarg bazaar through pine forest and alpine meadow to the glacier, which holds snow year round. You can walk (about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, easy to moderate) or hire a pony (Rs 700 to 1,500). The lower section near the start is crowded with vendors and pony handlers. Keep walking. The experience improves once you clear that first stretch. At the glacier, snow activities like sledging are available. Carry a warm layer even in summer. No entry fee, but pony and sledge charges apply.

  2. Zero Point (near Zoji La)

    3 to 4 hours round trip including drive

    A vast snow covered expanse near the Zoji La pass, about 25 km from Sonamarg bazaar at roughly 3,500 metres. Accessible by union taxi from the Sonamarg taxi stand (Rs 5,000 to 7,000 per vehicle, not per person). The drive itself is dramatic, climbing through the valley toward the Leh highway. The snow fields near Zero Point are expansive and quieter than Thajiwas. Your Srinagar cab cannot do this route. Share the taxi with other travellers at the stand to split the cost. Best from May to September. Closed in winter.

  3. Walk along the Sindh River

    30 minutes to 2 hours

    The Sindh River runs through the Sonamarg valley, cold and glacier fed, with clear water over smooth rocks. Walking along the river or sitting on the bank is one of the simplest and best things to do here. The stretch near the campgrounds is especially good in the evening. Do not wade deep. The current is stronger than it looks and the water temperature is painful within seconds.

  4. Riverside camping

    Overnight

    Several operators run riverside camps along the Sindh with tents, bonfire, and basic meals. If you are staying overnight, this is the way to do it. The camping experience here, with the river sound and the mountains around you, is better than any hotel in the bazaar. Book through your tour operator or a verified camping company. Season is roughly May to September.

  5. White water rafting on the Sindh River

    1.5 to 3 hours on water

    Grade II to IV rapids on the Sindh River, available roughly June to August through operators based in Sonamarg or Srinagar. The river is glacier fed and cold, so wetsuits are provided. Not as well known as the Zanskar rafting in Ladakh, but a solid half day activity if you are spending the night.

  6. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (base camp)

    5 to 7 days

    Sonamarg is the starting point for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, one of the best multi day treks in India. The route passes through Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangabal lakes over 5 to 7 days. Season is roughly June to September. Requires a guide, proper gear, and moderate fitness. This is not a casual walk. But for trekkers, it is the single strongest reason to come to Sonamarg.

Do not attempt to send your Srinagar cab on these routes. The checkpoint will turn you back.

Thajiwas or Zero Point: pick one if you only have a dayPick one per day: Thajiwas for snow you can touch, Zero Point for wide alpine views. Both in one day is rushed.

If you have one day, choose either Thajiwas or Zero Point. Trying to squeeze both into a morning is rushed and unsatisfying.

Thajiwas Glacier is the better choice for families, first time visitors, and people who want to touch snow. The 3 km walk or pony ride is manageable, and the glacier is impressive even in summer. Budget 2 to 4 hours.

Zero Point is the better choice for people who want a wide snow landscape and are comfortable with higher altitude (3,500 m). The drive is dramatic. Budget 3 to 4 hours.

If you are staying overnight, do one each day.

Carry warm clothes. Even in June, the glacier area and Zero Point are cold. A proper jacket and gloves, not just a hoodie.

Walk past the lower section of Thajiwas. The first 500 metres of the glacier trail are crowded with vendors, litter, and aggressive pony touts. It gets dramatically better once you clear that stretch. Do not judge the experience by the start.

Leave Srinagar early for a day trip. Departing after 9 AM means arriving at noon with only 3 to 4 hours. Leave by 7 AM for a proper day.

One night changes everything. The sunset, when the valley turns gold and the day trippers have left, is the part most people miss. If you can, camp by the Sindh River for a night.

Recheck locally. Pony rates, Zero Point taxi rates, and road conditions can shift with the season. Confirm at the taxi stand when you arrive.
