Gulmarg

A bowl shaped meadow at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal range, 51 km from Srinagar. Home to one of the world's highest gondola systems, India's best ski slopes, and a golf course at 8,690 feet. Two completely different destinations depending on whether you come for the snow or the flowers.

  • Altitude 2,650 m / 8,690 ft (town)
  • 51 km from Srinagar, 1.5 to 2 hrs
  • Gondola to ~4,000 m (Apharwat Peak)
  • Ski season: Dec to Mar
  • Summer meadows: Apr to Jun
  • Golf course at 8,690 ft

What makes it special

Gulmarg is two completely different places depending on when you show up. In winter, it is India's best ski resort, buried in dry powder snow, with the gondola ferrying skiers up to Apharwat Peak for runs through terrain that draws Europeans who have skied the Alps and say Gulmarg's off piste is better value for the quality. In summer, the same slopes become a vast meadow of wildflowers, the golf course opens, families ride ponies across the grass, and the gondola takes tourists up to see snow that lingers on the peak even in July. Both versions are real. Neither version prepares you for the other.

The town sits in a natural bowl at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal range, about 51 km from Srinagar. The name means "Meadow of Flowers," given by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century. The British turned it into a hill station and built a golf course that is now one of the world's highest 18 hole courses. After independence, the Indian Army established its High Altitude Warfare School here. The Gulmarg Gondola, built by the French firm Pomagalski in phases from 1998, is the centrepiece of any visit. Phase 1 takes you from the town to Kongdoori at about 3,050 metres. Phase 2 continues to Apharwat Peak at roughly 4,000 metres, where the Pir Panjal range, the Kashmir Valley, and on a clear day, Nanga Parbat are all visible.

Here is the ground reality that most travel pages bury. The gondola is a time slot system with limited daily tickets, and in peak season (December to February, May to June), slots sell out days in advance. If you show up without a booking, you may not ride at all. Phase 2 closes frequently in bad weather, especially in winter, and the ticket is generally non refundable if conditions shut it down after you have booked. Day trip visitors cannot drive into the town itself; vehicles park at the entrance and you walk about 10 to 15 minutes to the gondola station, or hire a pony. Touts and pony operators at the gate can be aggressive. And the altitude at Apharwat Peak (above 4,000 metres) is high enough to cause headaches and breathlessness if you have come straight from the plains.

None of this is a reason to skip Gulmarg. It is a reason to plan properly. Book your gondola tickets online 15 to 20 days ahead in peak season. Check weather before buying Phase 2. Carry warm clothes even in summer for the peak. And if you can, spend a night. The day trip crowd clears out by 4 PM, and the meadow in the evening, with the mountains going pink and the pine forest going quiet, is a completely different experience from the midday rush.

If you are planning Gulmarg as part of a larger Kashmir trip, our Kashmir package covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam handles the gondola booking, transport, and stays so you do not have to sort the logistics yourself.

Quick answers

Is Gulmarg worth visiting in 2026?
Yes, and it is the single most popular day trip from Srinagar for a reason. The gondola ride to Apharwat Peak gives you Himalayan views that are hard to match anywhere in India for the same level of accessibility. In winter, the skiing is genuinely world class. In summer, the meadow is beautiful and the peak still has snow. The main caveat: book your gondola tickets well in advance, especially in peak season, or you risk not riding at all.
How much do Gulmarg Gondola tickets cost in 2026?
Prices are set by the J&K Cable Car Corporation and shift slightly. As of 2026, Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) costs approximately Rs 740 to 800 per person. Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak) costs approximately Rs 920 to 1,000 per person. You must book Phase 1 before you can book Phase 2. Children under 3 travel free. Book online through the official JKCCC portal. Tatkal tickets are also available but sell out in minutes.
What is the best time to visit Gulmarg?
December to March for skiing and snow activities. April to June for wildflower meadows, the golf course, and comfortable weather. September to October for golden autumn light and thin crowds. Each season is a genuinely different experience.

How to reach Gulmarg

3 approach routes, with seasonal access.

  • From Srinagar

Year round. The Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch can close briefly after heavy snowfall in winter. Chain taxis may be required.
    Distance
    About 51 km via Tangmarg
    Time
1.5 to 2 hours by taxi
    Road
Tarred road through rice paddies, apple orchards, and then pine forest. The last 13 km from Tangmarg climb steeply.

The standard approach for almost every visitor. Leave Srinagar via Batmaloo, passing through Magam and Narbal where apple orchards line the road. The scenery improves dramatically as you climb past Tangmarg into the pine forest. Tangmarg is the last town with ATMs and fuel, so stop here if you need either. Private taxis from Srinagar cost approximately Rs 2,500 to 3,500 for a day trip. In winter, union chain taxis from Tangmarg may be mandatory for the final climb. Most package tours include this transfer.

  • From Srinagar Airport (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport)

Year round. Winter flights may face delays due to fog.
    Distance
    About 56 km
    Time
2 to 2.5 hours by taxi
    Road
City roads to the highway, then the Tangmarg climb.

If heading directly to Gulmarg from the airport, arrange a taxi in advance through your hotel or tour operator. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours including city traffic. Most travellers spend a night in Srinagar first and drive to Gulmarg the next morning, which is the better plan because it gives you a full day at Gulmarg rather than arriving tired in the afternoon.

  • From Delhi

Flights year round. Road from Srinagar to Gulmarg open year round with occasional winter closures.
    Distance
About 900 km by road, or fly to Srinagar (1.5 hours) plus 2 hours by road
    Time
Total about 4 to 5 hours door to door if flying
    Road
Flight to Srinagar, then road via Tangmarg.

Fly to Srinagar (about 1.5 hours from Delhi, multiple daily flights) and then drive to Gulmarg. This is the approach for almost all visitors from outside Kashmir. The road drive from Delhi via Jammu is 14 to 16 hours and only for dedicated road trip enthusiasts.

    Winter

    December to March

India's best skiing, deep powder, snow everywhere, the gondola through a white landscape

    Temperature
~-10 to 2°C, harsh cold especially at night
    Snow
Heavy. Deepest in January and February.
    Crowds
High during Christmas, New Year, and weekends. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead.
    What to carry
Heavy thermals, waterproof jacket, snow boots, gloves, sunglasses. Rent gear locally if needed.

This is why serious snow lovers come to Gulmarg. The town receives heavy, dry powder snow from December, and by January the slopes are at their best. Phase 1 serves intermediate skiers. Phase 2 opens up advanced and off piste terrain that draws international skiers. Ski gear rental starts from about Rs 1,000 per day. Lessons are available for beginners at Kongdoori. Even if you do not ski, the snow experience at Phase 1 is what most Indian families come for: touching snow for the first time, snowball fights, sledging. The downside: Phase 2 closes frequently in bad weather, temperatures drop to minus 10 at night, and you need serious warm clothing. Book gondola tickets and accommodation well ahead.

    Spring and Summer

    April to June

Wildflower meadows, the golf course opens, comfortable temperatures, snow still visible at the peak

    Temperature
~0 to 20°C, pleasant days, cool nights
    Crowds
Rising through the season. May and June are busy.
    Highlights
Wildflowers, golf, pony rides, clear mountain views, snow at the peak
    What to carry
Light jacket, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes. Warm layer for the gondola.

The snow melts at lower altitudes and reveals green meadows carpeted with wildflowers. April and May are comfortable during the day (10 to 20 degrees) with clear skies. The 18 hole golf course, one of the world's highest, opens for the season. Pony rides across the meadow are the main family activity. The gondola to Apharwat still shows snow at the peak, so you get both green meadows and snow in a single day. June gets warmer and tourist numbers climb. This is the best window for families who want mountains without extreme cold.

    Autumn

    September to October

Golden light, chinar colour on the drive, thin crowds, some of the best mountain clarity of the year

    Temperature
~-2 to 18°C, cold mornings by late October
    Crowds
    Low
    Highlights
Chinar colour, clear skies, sharp light, peaceful meadow
    What to carry
Warm layers. Proper jacket by October.

The least crowded good window. September is still warm. October brings chinar colour along the Srinagar to Gulmarg road, and the mountain air gets crisp and clear. The gondola operates normally. Snow has not yet arrived at lower altitudes, but Apharwat may get early dustings. Photographers love this window. Hotels are cheaper than peak season.

  • Monsoon

    July to August

Rain, mist, limited visibility, the gondola may close frequently, not the ideal window

    Temperature
    ~8 to 25°C, humid
    Rain
    Frequent and sometimes heavy
    Gondola
    Closures common due to weather
    Honest advice
Plan for April to June or September to October instead if possible

Gulmarg receives monsoon rain, and July and August can be wet and misty. The gondola closes during heavy rain or poor visibility. Views from the peak are often blocked by cloud. The meadow is green, but you cannot count on clear days. If you have flexibility, avoid this window. If you are in Kashmir during monsoon and want to see Gulmarg, go on a clear morning and be prepared for the gondola to not operate.

Things to see & do

6 things worth your time at Gulmarg.

  1. Gondola ride to Apharwat Peak

3 to 4 hours for both phases

The main event. Phase 1 (about 10 minutes) takes you from the town to Kongdoori at 3,050 metres, where you can walk around the meadow, rent snow gear in winter, or sit at a cafe. Phase 2 (about 12 to 15 minutes) continues to Apharwat Peak at roughly 4,000 metres. On a clear day, you can see Nanga Parbat, the Pir Panjal range, and the Kashmir Valley stretching below. Snow lingers here even in summer. Book online through the official JKCCC portal at least 15 to 20 days in advance in peak season. Phase 2 closes in bad weather and tickets are generally non refundable. Carry warm clothes even in July.

  2. Skiing and snowboarding (winter)

    Full day or multi day

Gulmarg's ski season runs roughly December to March. Beginner slopes are at Kongdoori (Baby Slope, Highland Park). Phase 1 is intermediate. Phase 2 opens up advanced and off piste terrain through powder that serious skiers rate among the best in Asia. Full gear rental starts from about Rs 1,000 per day. Instructors are available for beginners. Multi day ski courses offered by operators like Gulmarg Ski Resort and the J&K tourism ski school. If you have never skied, Gulmarg is a great place to start because the snow quality is forgiving.

  3. Walk or pony ride across the meadow (summer)

    1 to 3 hours

In summer, the town meadow is a wide, green, flower covered bowl surrounded by pine forest and mountain ridges. Pony rides are the classic family activity. Union rates apply, generally Rs 500 to 1,500 depending on the route and duration. You can also walk the meadow on foot, which is more pleasant and free. The walk to Strawberry Valley or toward the golf course takes about an hour each way. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water.

  4. Golf at the Gulmarg Golf Course

    Half day

An 18 hole course at 2,650 metres, one of the highest green golf courses in the world. Originally laid out by the British in the early 1900s. Open roughly April to November. Green fees are modest. Equipment can be rented locally. Even if you do not play, walking across the course in the early morning, with the Pir Panjal behind you and dew on the fairways, is genuinely special.

  5. Trek to Khilanmarg

2 to 3 hours round trip

A 6 km walk from Gulmarg town through forest and meadows to Khilanmarg, a smaller meadow at a higher altitude with views of the main Himalayan range. In spring, the wildflowers here are denser than in the main bowl. The trail is gentle and well worn. In winter, Khilanmarg is snow covered and the trek is harder. Best in May and June. No guide needed, but carry water and a snack.

  6. Visit St. Mary's Church

    20 to 30 minutes

A small, well preserved Victorian era church from 1902, with grey stone walls and stained glass. One of the few surviving British era structures in the town. Worth a quick stop on the walk between the gondola station and the main meadow. Open to visitors.

Know before you visit Gulmarg

The practical bits, from people who have been.

Gondola tickets: the biggest planning decisionBook online 15 to 20 days ahead. No walk up counter. Phase 2 closes in bad weather and tickets are not refundable.

This is where most Gulmarg visits go right or wrong. The gondola operates on a time slot system with limited tickets per slot. In peak season (December to February, May to June), tickets sell out 15 to 20 days in advance. There is no walk up counter. Book online through the official JKCCC portal (etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com). You must book Phase 1 before you can book Phase 2.

Phase 2 closes frequently in bad weather, especially in winter. If Phase 2 shuts on your booked day, the ticket is generally non refundable. A tatkal system also exists (opens at 5 PM daily, 300 Phase 1 and 200 Phase 2 tickets at slightly higher prices), but these sell out in minutes. Bottom line: book early, check weather forecasts, and if the outlook for Phase 2 is poor, consider buying only Phase 1 and saving the money.

Altitude at Apharwat PeakPhase 2 is above 4,000 m. Walk slowly, drink water. Skip Phase 2 if you have respiratory or cardiac conditions.

Apharwat Peak (Phase 2) sits above 4,000 metres. If you have flown from the plains and driven straight to Gulmarg the same day, your body has gone from sea level to 4,000 metres in under 24 hours. Headaches, breathlessness, and nausea are common. Walk slowly at the peak. Do not run around in the snow. Drink water. If you feel seriously unwell, descend to Kongdoori (Phase 1) immediately.

People with heart, lung, asthma, or blood pressure conditions should avoid Phase 2 entirely. Children under 3 are not recommended for Phase 2. Most healthy adults handle it fine with slow movement and hydration, but do not ignore symptoms.

Practical tips most visitors needWalk from the gate, carry cash, dress warm even in summer, arrive early, save your gondola ticket offline.

Vehicle access. Day trip vehicles park at the Gulmarg entrance. You walk about 10 to 15 minutes to the gondola station or hire a pony. Pony operators can be pushy. The walk is easy and flat. Overnight hotel guests can drive into the town.

Carry cash. ATMs are scarce in Gulmarg. Tangmarg (13 km downhill) has them. Bring enough from Srinagar for pony rides, food, snow gear rental, and tips. Many vendors are cash only.

Warm clothes always. Even in July, Apharwat Peak is cold. Carry a proper warm layer and gloves for the gondola. In winter, you need full snow gear: thermals, waterproof jacket, snow boots, gloves, sunglasses.

Arrive early. Queues at the gondola station build after 11 AM. Book the earliest available slot and arrive by 9:30 AM for the smoothest experience.

Save your ticket offline. Mobile network is unreliable in Gulmarg and dead at the gondola stations. Screenshot your e ticket or print it before leaving Srinagar.

Who Gulmarg suits and who should reconsiderGreat for families, couples, and skiers. Seniors fine at Phase 1, cautious at Phase 2. Not suitable for pets.

Families. Excellent, especially in summer. Kids love the pony rides and the snow at Phase 1. Phase 2 is fine for healthy children over 5 or so, but watch for altitude symptoms.

Couples. Great in any season. A night in Gulmarg after the day trippers leave is particularly special.

Seniors. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) is fine for most reasonably mobile seniors. Phase 2 is risky for anyone with heart, lung, or respiratory issues due to the altitude. The walk from the parking gate to the gondola is easy and flat.

Serious skiers. Gulmarg is India's best ski destination and increasingly on the global skiing map. The off piste at Phase 2 draws international visitors.

Pets. Not practical. Most hotels do not allow pets, and the gondola does not permit them.

Nearby attractions

Other places worth the detour.

  • Dal Lake, Srinagar

    About 51 km, 1.5 to 2 hours

The defining experience of Srinagar and the natural pairing with a Gulmarg trip. Shikara rides, heritage houseboats, the early morning floating vegetable market, and Mughal gardens along the shore. Most travellers split their Kashmir trip between Srinagar and Gulmarg.

  • Alpather Lake

About 13 km from Gulmarg, near Apharwat Peak

A high altitude lake at the base of Apharwat Peak, frozen for much of the year. Reachable by a trek from Kongdoori in summer. The setting is dramatic, with snow and rock surrounding the water. Only for those comfortable with a moderate altitude hike.

  • Shrine of Baba Reshi

    About 5 km from Gulmarg

A ziarat (Muslim shrine) dedicated to Baba Payamuddin, a 15th century saint. Set in a pine forest on the road between Tangmarg and Gulmarg. A short, quiet stop if you are driving between the two. Open to visitors of all faiths.

  • Khilanmarg

About 6 km trek from Gulmarg

A smaller meadow above Gulmarg, accessible by a gentle trek through forest. Dense wildflowers in May and June, and open views of the main Himalayan range. The best short walk from the town if you have a spare morning.

  • Pahalgam

About 140 km from Gulmarg via Srinagar

The other major Kashmir excursion from Srinagar, in the opposite direction. Known for the Lidder Valley, Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and as the base for the Amarnath Yatra. Most Kashmir itineraries pair Gulmarg and Pahalgam with Srinagar as the base. The two are in opposite directions from Srinagar and each deserve a full day.

  • Tangmarg

    13 km downhill from Gulmarg

The last town before the climb to Gulmarg. ATMs, fuel, and basic shops here. Tangmarg Waterfall is a short stop on the drive. In winter, chain taxis from the union stand here may be mandatory for the final stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gulmarg

How much do Gulmarg Gondola tickets cost in 2026?

Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) costs approximately Rs 740 to 800 per person. Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak) costs approximately Rs 920 to 1,000 per person. Prices are set by the J&K Cable Car Corporation and may adjust slightly through the year. Children under 3 ride free. Book online through the official JKCCC portal. Tatkal tickets are available at higher prices but sell out within minutes.

How do I book Gulmarg Gondola tickets online?

Visit etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com (the official JKCCC portal). Select Gulmarg Gondola, choose Phase 1, pick your date and time slot, enter passenger details with a valid government ID, and pay. For Phase 2, return to the portal and enter your Phase 1 transaction ID. In peak season, book at least 15 to 20 days ahead. Save your e ticket as a screenshot because mobile network is unreliable in Gulmarg.

Is Gulmarg worth a day trip from Srinagar?

Yes, and it is the most common way to visit. The drive is about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Budget a full day: leave Srinagar by 8 AM, gondola ride with both phases, time at the top, and return by evening. That said, staying overnight is better. The meadow in the evening after the day trippers leave is a different experience entirely.

Can I see snow in Gulmarg in summer?

Yes. Apharwat Peak (Phase 2) retains snow even in June and July. Many families come to Gulmarg in summer specifically for this: green meadows at the base and snow at the top on the same day. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) may also have snow patches in early spring.

Is the Gulmarg Gondola safe?

Yes. It is built and maintained to international safety standards. Operations stop automatically during high winds, heavy snow, or poor visibility. The main risk is altitude sickness at Phase 2 (above 4,000 m), not the gondola itself. People with respiratory or cardiac conditions should avoid Phase 2.

What should I wear to Gulmarg?

In winter: heavy thermals, waterproof snow jacket, snow boots (rent locally if needed), gloves, beanie, sunglasses. In summer: comfortable walking clothes with a warm jacket for the gondola ride to the peak. Even in July, Apharwat is cold enough for a proper warm layer. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential in all seasons due to altitude and snow glare.

Is there skiing for beginners in Gulmarg?

Yes. Beginner slopes are at Kongdoori (Phase 1 level), including Baby Slope and Highland Park. Instructors and full gear rental are available. A basic skiing course runs several days. Gulmarg is actually a good place to learn because the dry powder snow is forgiving for falls.

Can I drive into Gulmarg town?

Overnight hotel guests with confirmed bookings can drive in. Day trip visitors must park at the town entrance and walk about 10 to 15 minutes to the gondola station or hire a pony. In winter, chain taxis from Tangmarg may be mandatory for the last 13 km climb.

Is there mobile network in Gulmarg?

Weak and unreliable in the town. Essentially dead at Kongdoori and Apharwat Peak. Download offline maps, save your gondola e ticket as a screenshot, and let your family know you may be unreachable for a few hours.

How many days should I spend in Gulmarg?

A day trip from Srinagar covers the gondola and a walk around the meadow. One night is better and lets you experience the evening quiet. Two to three nights if you are skiing. For a general Kashmir trip, most travellers spend one night in Gulmarg and two nights in Srinagar.
