What makes it special
Annandale is the flat ground at the bottom of Shimla's hills, and the contrast with the rest of the city is immediate. Where Shimla is all steep lanes, crowded bazaars, and buildings stacked on hillsides, Annandale is open, level, and ringed by tall deodar trees. A wide lawn, a 9 hole golf course that you can look at but not play on (it is Army territory), a helipad, and the Army Heritage Museum. The British used this ground for polo, horse racing, cricket, and elaborate parties during the Raj. They named it after a valley in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and the locals called it "Company Ka Baag," which tells you everything about who it belonged to.
Today, Annandale is managed by the Indian Army, and the main reason most visitors come here is the Army Heritage Museum. Established in 2006 by the Army Training Command, it houses a surprisingly well curated collection of military history, from ancient weapons dating back thousands of years to the Pakistan surrender letter from 1971. The museum is divided into galleries covering different eras, with uniforms, medals, regimental flags, and photographs laid out in a way that holds your attention even if you are not a military history person. The VR shooting experience, where you fire simulated weapons using actual military hardware integrated with virtual reality, is a popular highlight. Children queue up for it. Most adults do too.
A few things to know before you go. The museum is closed on Mondays and gazetted holidays, and shuts for a lunch break around midday (timing varies, so arrive by 10:30 AM or after 2:30 PM to be safe). Entry is free, but you must carry an original government photo ID. Aadhaar card, passport, or driving licence will work. Bring the physical document, not a photocopy or a screenshot on your phone. Guards check at the security checkpoint and will turn you away without it. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the museum galleries, and taking pictures around military infrastructure on the grounds is also restricted. Follow the instructions at the entrance. This is an active Army facility.
The setting adds to the experience. The museum building is in Tudorbethan style, with half timbered walls and chimneys that look like they belong in a period documentary. Behind it, the Annandale ground stretches flat, with the golf course and parade ground on one side and mountains rising on every other. The golf course and parade ground are managed by the Army. Public playing on the greens and walking on the course are not allowed, but you can view the course from the designated perimeter points and it genuinely looks good against the tree line. There is also a glass house (the Cactus Museum) with about 40 varieties of cactus, well maintained lawns, and a small cafe serving basic snacks and chai. The whole area has a calm, orderly feel that is the opposite of Shimla's tourist chaos up the hill.
Annandale works best as a morning or afternoon outing. One to two hours covers the museum, the glass house, and a walk around the permitted areas of the grounds. Combine it with a visit to the Ridge or the Viceregal Lodge to fill a full day. It is not a place you would travel to Shimla specifically for, but if you are in the city and want something other than a temple, a viewpoint, or a shopping street, this is the best alternative.

Things to see & do
4 things worth your time at Annandale.
Visit the Army Heritage Museum
45 minutes to 1 hourThe museum is divided into galleries covering the Indian Army from ancient times to the present. Weapons, uniforms, medals, and regimental flags spanning centuries, laid out in a way that holds your attention. The highlight for many visitors is the 1971 war section, which includes the surrender letter of the Pakistan Army and the Pakistani flag. Statues of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and warriors from Himachal Pradesh stand in the central courtyard. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the galleries, so leave the camera in your bag and just look. Plan 45 minutes to an hour to see everything properly.
Try the VR shooting experience
15 to 20 minutesThe VR Experience Centre lets you fire simulated weapons using actual military hardware integrated with virtual reality. It is supervised by Army staff and safe for all ages. A popular highlight of the museum that both children and adults queue up for. There may be a small additional charge. Expect a short wait on weekends and holidays.
See the Cactus Museum (Glass House)
15 to 20 minutesThe glass house near the museum building has about 40 varieties of cactus and other plants displayed in a clean, well lit space. It is small and takes about 15 minutes, but it is an unexpected find within an Army complex. The surrounding lawns are well maintained and good for sitting on a clear afternoon.
Walk around the Annandale ground
20 to 30 minutesAfter the museum, walk around the permitted areas of the Annandale ground. The 9 hole golf course stretches across the flat valley floor, but it is managed by the Army and closed to the public. You can view it from the designated perimeter points. Do not walk on the greens or the parade ground. The contrast between this open, level ground ringed by deodar trees and the congested hillsides of Shimla, just 3 km away, is worth a few minutes of your time. Photography around the military infrastructure is restricted, so stick to the permitted areas.
