- Main Highlight
- A complete Kinnaur and Spiti circuit from Shimla to Manali with an added Shimla rest night before the long mountain drives begin, covering Kaza, the high villages, Kunzum Pass, and Chandratal
- Best Season
- June to September, subject to the opening of Kunzum Pass and the Chandratal route
- Ideal For
- Solo travellers, couples, friends, and first time Spiti travellers who want a more relaxed, rested start before the longer mountain drives
Know Before You Go
- Chandratal and Kunzum are open only in season and depend on the weather and road. You reach them only when the road is clear and safe
- You camp only at the marked camping zone near Chandratal. You walk a short way to see the lake. There is no camping right at the lake because it is protected
- The Chandratal camp is small and basic. If it is full, or if the group wants more comfort like senior citizen or family groups, you stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Losar, the last village before Kunzum Pass. This is always told to you in advance, and you still visit Chandratal Lake either way
- The camp night is simple. Expect basic tents, usually 3 people sharing, shared dining, and shared or limited washrooms. This is part of the fun, not a luxury stay
- Room sharing can be double, triple or quad. A single room may cost extra and depends on availability. A single tent at Chandratal may not always be possible
- A dedicated trip captain travels with the bigger Social and Full batches, which are groups above 10 people. Smaller batches have a trip coordinator and the local driver
- The Shimla day is a rest day. Standard hotel check in time applies, and early check in is only if a room is free, so it cannot be promised. A Shimla sightseeing vehicle and paid activities are not included
- Pin Valley is on the route and you get a real taste of it, but going deep is not promised. On most group trips, time and daylight mean you see the nearer spots instead of driving far towards Mud Village. If the day goes well, the group may go deeper
- Some days have long drives, mainly Shimla to Sangla, Kalpa to Tabo, and Chandratal to Manali. Start early and stay flexible. All times are rough guesses
- Spiti is high up. Drink water, eat light, avoid alcohol, and listen to your trip captain or coordinator. The Kinnaur entry helps your body adjust slowly
- Phone network is weak after Kaza and ATMs are not reliable. Carry enough cash
- The oxygen cylinder is for emergencies and you pay only if you use it. It does not replace a doctor. If you have heart or breathing problems, check with your doctor before you book
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this different from the Best Selling Spiti Circuit?
The Best Selling version drives straight towards Sangla the same morning you reach Shimla. This version adds a full rest day in Shimla first. You reach Shimla in the morning, rest and look around at your own pace, and join the main group the next morning. After that, the Spiti circuit is the same. It is the same trip with a slower, more restful start.
Why is a night in Shimla included?
The Shimla night lets you rest after the overnight Volvo before the long drive to Sangla. Many travellers like this slower, more comfortable start before the mountain days begin.
When does the trip start and when do I join the main group?
You reach Shimla in the morning after an overnight Volvo from Delhi, rest for the day, and join the main group in Shimla the next morning. Departures run on select dates through the season, including special batches and long weekend departures, so check the current dates with the team.
Do we get a trip captain?
A dedicated trip captain travels with every Social batch and Full batch, which are groups above 10 people. The captain leads the trip and looks after the group from start to finish. Smaller Micro and Small batches, up to 10 people, are looked after by a trip coordinator and an experienced local driver.
Do we stop at the Kinnaur Gate and the Roghi Suicide Point?
Yes. On the way into Kinnaur you stop at the Kinnaur Gate, the big Welcome to Kinnaur archway. Near Kalpa, you drive to Roghi village and the Suicide Point, a cliff viewpoint with a steep drop to the Sutlej and Kinner Kailash across the valley. Both depend on time, daylight, and the road on the day.
Is early check in included in Shimla?
No. Standard hotel check in time applies. Early check in may be given if a room is free, but it cannot be promised. You can drop your bags and freshen up while you wait, based on the hotel.
Is Chandratal camping sure?
The camping night is planned at the marked camping zone near Chandratal. But the camp is small and depends on the season and weather. If it is full, or if the group wants more comfort like senior citizen or family groups, you stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Losar. This is always told to you in advance.
Where is the Chandratal camp?
You camp only at the marked camping zone near Chandratal, not right at the lake, because the lake is protected. You walk a short way to see the lake, so you still get plenty of time by the water.
Do we still see Chandratal if we stay in Losar?
Yes. You still visit Chandratal Lake even if you sleep in Losar. It always depends on a safe road, daylight, and weather.
What if Kunzum Pass or Chandratal is not open?
Your trip captain changes the route and picks the safest option for the day. The stay may move to Losar or another good place, and the sightseeing order may change. Safety comes first.
Do we visit the Gue mummy?
Yes, we usually take the short side trip to Gue village to see the 500 year old preserved mummy of monk Sangha Tenzin, one of the only self mummified monks in India. It is open in the daytime, and the mummy room is opened by a local caretaker if it is shut. Flash photos and drones are not allowed because it is a holy place near the border.
Is Pin Valley sure?
Pin Valley is on the route and you get a real taste of it. But going deep is not promised on every trip. On most group trips, time and daylight mean you see the nearer spots instead of driving far towards Mud Village. If the day goes well, the group may go deeper.
Is this good for first timers?
Yes. You enter Spiti through Kinnaur, so your body gets more time to adjust to the height than on the direct Manali route. The extra rest day in Shimla makes the start even easier. Still, be ready for long drives, high altitude, simple stays, and changing mountain weather.
How cold does it get?
Even in summer, nights at Chandratal and Kaza get cold, often near or below freezing. Days are pleasant and sunny. Carry warm layers, a good jacket, and a warm cap for the evenings, mainly the Chandratal night.
What about phone network and ATMs?
Network is weak after Kaza and can drop near Chandratal. Only some postpaid connections work in parts of Spiti. ATMs are not reliable, so carry enough cash for meals, tickets, and small buys.
How does the oxygen work?
An emergency oxygen cylinder is in the vehicle. You pay only if you use it. It is for safety and does not replace a doctor. If you have heart or breathing problems, check with your doctor before you book.
What meals are included?
7 breakfasts and 7 dinners on the stay nights, so 14 meals in total on the MAP plan. Lunches, snacks, drinks, and Volvo meals are not included.
What vehicle and group size can I expect?
A Tempo Traveller or Force Traveller runs from Shimla to Manali, based on group size. Groups go from Micro (3 to 5 people) to a Full batch (16 to 20). Room sharing can be double, triple or quad.
