Know Before You Go

This is a deep Ladakh expedition that goes into restricted Changthang territory. It is not a standard Nubra Pangong loop. Every day builds on the previous one in terms of altitude and remoteness
Leh is at 11,500 ft. Days 1 and 2 are for acclimatization. You need 4 days of progressive altitude gain (Days 1 through 4) before attempting Umlingla at 19,024 ft on Day 6. Do not rush this
Hanle and the Umlingla corridor are extremely remote. There are no ATMs, no restaurants, no fuel stations, and no mobile network. Carry enough cash and personal supplies before leaving Leh
A 4x4 vehicle is mandatory for this route. Regular cars and standard SUVs cannot handle the Changthang plateau terrain, especially the Umlingla approach and the Puga to Tso Moriri stretch
Restricted area permits for Hanle, Umlingla, and the Changthang sector are required. We process all permits as part of your package
Hanle stays are in warm homestays run by local families. Tso Moriri stays are in camps or the best available local accommodation. These are basic but clean and warm. This is not hotel country

Is 9 days too long for a Ladakh trip?

Not at all. This itinerary is well paced with no drive longer than 7 to 8 hours. Each day has a purpose and the progressive altitude gain is what keeps you safe and comfortable when you reach Umlingla at 19,024 ft on Day 6. Rushing this route into fewer days would compromise safety and the experience.

How is this different from the standard 6 or 7 day Ladakh packages?

The standard packages cover Leh, Nubra, and Pangong. This trip goes far beyond that into restricted Changthang territory. You get Hanle stargazing, Umlingla (the world's highest motorable road at 19,024 ft), Puga Valley's geothermal fields, and Tso Moriri, a pristine Ramsar Wetland. It is the most complete Ladakh circuit you can do.

Is Umlingla Pass safe to visit?

Yes, with proper acclimatization. This itinerary gives you 4 full days of progressive altitude gain (Leh, Leh sightseeing, Nubra via Khardung La, Pangong) before you reach Hanle on Day 5. By Day 6, your body has adjusted enough to handle 19,024 ft safely. An emergency oxygen cylinder is carried in the vehicle at all times, and your driver is experienced in high altitude terrain.

What is there to see at Hanle?

Hanle is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, one of the highest in the world. The skies here are among the darkest in India, and on a clear night you can see the Milky Way with your naked eyes. You also visit Hanle Monastery, one of the oldest in Ladakh. The two night stay gives you two chances at stargazing, so even if one night is cloudy, you have a backup.

What is Puga Valley and why is it special?

Puga Valley is a geothermal hotspot at around 14,000 ft with bubbling mud pools, steaming sulphur vents, and a landscape that looks like it belongs in Iceland, not India. You drive through it on Day 7 on your way from Hanle to Tso Moriri. It is one of the most unexpected and photogenic stops on the entire trip.

What kind of stays should I expect at Hanle and Tso Moriri?

Hanle stays are in warm homestays run by local Changpa families. They are basic but clean, with proper bedding and home cooked meals. Tso Moriri stays are in camps or the best available local accommodation near Korzok village. These are remote high altitude locations, so the stays are not hotel grade, but they are comfortable and warm enough for a good night of sleep.

Why is a 4x4 vehicle mandatory for this route?

The Changthang plateau terrain between Pangong, Hanle, Umlingla, and Tso Moriri includes unpaved roads, river crossings, and extreme altitude stretches that regular SUVs and sedans cannot safely handle. A 4x4 with high ground clearance is essential for your safety and the vehicle's reliability on this route.

What about mobile network and ATMs on this trip?

Your phone will work in Leh town only. From Day 3 onwards (Nubra, Pangong, Hanle, Umlingla, Puga, Tso Moriri), expect very limited to zero mobile signal. ATMs are only in Leh. Carry enough cash for the entire trip before you leave the city. Download offline maps and let your family know you will be unreachable for extended periods.

Do you arrange the restricted area permits?

Yes. Hanle, Umlingla, and the Changthang corridor require special restricted area permits in addition to the standard Inner Line Permit. We process all of these as part of your package. You do not need to arrange anything separately.

Can I do this trip if I have never been to Ladakh before?

You can, but you should be aware that this is an advanced route, not a beginner's Ladakh trip. If you are fit, healthy, and willing to follow acclimatization guidance strictly, this itinerary is designed to be safe for first timers too. The progressive altitude gain over Days 1 through 4 prepares your body before the extreme altitude days.
