City Palace Udaipur

The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built over 400 years by successive Mewar rulers, standing right on the banks of Lake Pichola in Udaipur's old city

  • Heritage palace complex
  • Old City, Udaipur
  • Open daily
  • October to March best
  • 2 to 4 hours

What makes it special

City Palace is the single structure that defines Udaipur's skyline. You see it from across Lake Pichola, from the ghats, from rooftop restaurants, from practically everywhere in the old city. And the thing that surprises most first time visitors is the scale. This is not one palace. It is eleven palaces built by successive Mewar rulers over roughly 400 years, all connected into one sprawling complex of courtyards, corridors, balconies, museums, and a couple of luxury hotels that are still operating inside it.

Maharana Udai Singh II began laying the foundations around 1553, as he started building Udaipur itself, leading up to the formal shift of the Mewar capital from Chittorgarh in the 1560s. Every ruler after him added something. Mor Chowk got its glass peacocks. The Sheesh Mahal got its mirrors. The Zenana Mahal got its frescoes. Durbar Hall got its chandeliers. What you see today is four centuries of building, rebuilding, and decorating stacked on top of each other, each generation leaving its own mark. The architecture mixes Rajput fortress design with Mughal decorative elements and, in the later sections, European influences that arrived with colonial contact.

Here is the practical part most pages skip. City Palace runs a tiered ticketing system, not one flat entry fee. The basic complex ticket gets you the courtyards. The museum ticket gets you the galleries, armoury, and the main sections people actually come to see. The Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall are a separate ticket entirely. If you show up without knowing this, you end up confused at the counter or missing sections you would have wanted to see. Plan your ticket before you reach the gate.

The palace is worth the time. Two hours is a minimum, three is comfortable, four if you stop and read things. Most people who feel disappointed rushed through in 90 minutes and missed the museum entirely. Slow down. The details reward patience.

What to see inside

Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard). Three exquisite glass mosaic peacocks on the courtyard wall, each set in a different season. This is the most photographed spot inside the palace, and for good reason. The craftsmanship is genuinely impressive up close.

Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors). A room entirely lined with mirrors and coloured glass, designed to reflect candlelight. Smaller than you might expect, but the effect is striking even in daylight.

Zenana Mahal. The private quarters of the royal women, with painted walls, coloured glass windows, and frescoes showing court life. One of the more atmospheric sections of the complex.

The Armoury. Royal weapons, armour, and a life size horse in full battle gear. Swords, daggers, rifles, and shields, some dating back to the 15th century. If you have any interest in military history, do not skip this.

Manak Chowk. A large royal courtyard used for ceremonies, surrounded by palace walls on all sides. Good for getting a sense of the scale.

Krishna Vilas. Miniature paintings depicting royal processions, festivals, and hunting scenes. Worth a slow look if you care about Rajasthani art.

Painting Gallery. A quieter section with traditional Rajasthani art. Less crowded, more rewarding if you give it time.

Upper balcony views of Lake Pichola. Do not miss this. The view of the lake, Jag Mandir, and the Aravalli hills from the upper levels is the single best view in Udaipur. Most people rush past, so take a few minutes here.

Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall (separate ticket). The Crystal Gallery houses a private collection of crystal furniture, crockery, and even a crystal bed, ordered from England in 1877 by Maharana Sajjan Singh. He died before it arrived, and the items stayed packed in crates for over a hundred years before being displayed. The Durbar Hall next to it has enormous chandeliers, royal portraits, and a scale that genuinely impresses. Whether the separate ticket is worth it depends on your budget and interest. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Casual visitors can comfortably skip it and still have a complete experience.

Travellers should confirm entry fees, timings, and ticket categories close to their visit date, as these details can change between seasons.

Quick answers

Is City Palace worth visiting?
Yes, without question. It is the one thing in Udaipur you should not skip, even if you skip everything else. The museum sections, the courtyards, and the Lake Pichola views from the upper balconies make it the most complete heritage experience in the city. Budget at least two and a half hours.
How much time do you need?
Two to three hours for the main palace and museum. Add another hour if you want the Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall. A rushed visit of 90 minutes is possible but you will miss the best parts. Most people who feel disappointed rushed through too fast.
Is the entry fee worth it?
Yes. Get the museum ticket, not just the basic complex ticket. The complex ticket only covers the outer courtyards, which are fine but not what people come for. If budget is tight, skip the Crystal Gallery. It is interesting but not essential.

    Winter

    October to March

The best window for City Palace. Comfortable walking weather and clean light.

    Day temperature
    15 to 28°C
    Crowds
High, especially Nov to Feb peak
    Photography
    Excellent, clean warm light
    Best months
    November and February

Daytime temperatures sit between 15 and 28°C, comfortable for a long palace walk. Mornings can be cool in December and January, so a light jacket helps. The light is clean and warm, good for courtyard photos. This is also peak tourist season, so expect bigger crowds from 10:30 AM to 1 PM. November and February are the sweet spot. Not as cold as December and January mornings, not as crowded as the Diwali and Christmas weeks, and the light is at its best.

  • Summer

    April to June

Summer heat is real. Visit early morning or plan around it.

    Day temperature
    30 to 42°C
    Crowds
    Low to moderate
    Comfort
    Tough after 11 AM
    Tip
    Early morning visits only

Udaipur summers push past 40°C by May, and walking through a palace complex in that kind of heat is not enjoyable. If this is your only window, be at the gate by 9:30 AM, finish by noon, and retreat to a shaded rooftop for the rest of the day. Carry plenty of water. The upside is thinner crowds, so you will have the courtyards more to yourself.

  • Monsoon

    July to September

Dramatic lake views, but humid and occasionally wet.

    Day temperature
    25 to 35°C
    Crowds
    Low
    Lake levels
    Full, dramatic views
    Rain
    Afternoon showers common

The lake fills up and the palace looks its most dramatic against grey skies and green hills. But the humidity inside the corridors is real, and rain can interrupt your visit. Crowds are thinner. If you do not mind the weather, it is a valid time. Just wear shoes that can handle wet stone floors.

Things to see & do

6 things worth your time at City Palace Udaipur.

  1. Walk through the palace museum

    2 to 3 hours

The core experience. The museum sections cover the armoury, the painting galleries, Mor Chowk, Sheesh Mahal, Zenana Mahal, and Krishna Vilas. This is where the real detail lives. Get the museum ticket, not just the complex entry. Go in order through the marked route and do not rush past the upper balconies, the Lake Pichola view from there is the best in Udaipur.

  2. Visit the Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall

    45 minutes to 1 hour

A separate ticket gets you into the Crystal Gallery (crystal furniture, crockery, and a crystal bed ordered from England in 1877, never unpacked for over a century) and the Durbar Hall (one of India's most impressive royal reception halls, with massive chandeliers and portraits of Mewar rulers). Worth it for history enthusiasts. Casual visitors can skip without regret.

  3. Sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola

    1 to 1.5 hours

The boat ghat is about 200 metres from the palace entrance. Most visitors do City Palace in the morning (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM) and come back for a sunset boat ride (generally 5:00 to 7:00 PM). The evening light on the palace from the lake is worth planning your day around. Morning rides are cheaper. Evening rides are better.

  4. Walk to Jagdish Temple

    20 to 30 minutes

A 17th century Vishnu temple in the Indo Aryan style, about 150 metres from City Palace. The carved exterior is impressive and you will walk past it going to or from the palace. No separate ticket needed.

  5. Evening at Bagore Ki Haveli

    1.5 to 2 hours

An 18th century haveli turned museum near Gangaur Ghat, about 500 metres from the palace. The real draw is the Dharohar folk dance show every evening at 7 PM with traditional Rajasthani music and dance. Book tickets early or arrive by 6 PM, it gets crowded.

  6. Rooftop lunch with palace views

    1 to 2 hours

The old city around the palace is full of rooftop restaurants with direct views of the lake and the palace. Good options line the Gangaur Ghat and Lal Ghat area. The food is a mix of Rajasthani, North Indian, and continental. Mid range meals run ₹300 to ₹600 per person.

Know before you visit City Palace Udaipur

The practical bits, from people who have been.

The ticketing system is confusing. Here is how it works.Tiered tickets, not one flat entry fee. Get the museum ticket at minimum.

The palace runs a tiered ticket system. The cheapest ticket (around ₹50) only covers the outer complex and courtyards. The museum ticket (roughly ₹300 to ₹450 for Indians) covers the galleries, the armoury, and the main sections worth seeing. The Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall need a separate, pricier ticket. If you are going to visit, get the museum ticket at minimum. The complex only ticket will leave you feeling like you missed the point, because you did. Fees change periodically, so confirm at the counter or the official City Palace website before your visit.

Common mistakes visitors makeArriving late, buying the wrong ticket, and rushing through

Arriving after 10:30 AM and spending the first 30 minutes in a ticket queue. Buying the cheapest ticket and wondering why you did not see anything. Rushing through in 90 minutes and leaving without reaching the upper balconies. Not bringing water on a summer visit. Wearing heels on uneven palace floors. If you avoid these five things, your visit will be noticeably better than most people's.

Who it suits, and who should reconsiderGreat for most travellers, but not ideal for very young children or heat sensitive visitors in summer

Couples, families (kids old enough to walk for a couple of hours), solo travellers, history enthusiasts, and first timers in Udaipur will all find it worthwhile. Seniors can visit comfortably with wheelchairs, ramps, and lifts available. Very young children will find it boring after 30 minutes. If you are not interested in history or architecture at all, the palace is mainly a photo backdrop and two hours might feel long. In peak summer, anyone with heat sensitivity should either visit at opening time or skip it for that day.

Combining with Lake PicholaPalace in the morning, sunset boat ride in the evening. The best one day plan.

The boat ride ghat is about 200 metres from the palace. The most popular day plan is City Palace in the morning (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM), lunch at one of the old city's rooftop restaurants, and a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola (generally 5:00 to 7:00 PM). The evening light on the palace from the lake is worth planning your day around.

Hiring a guideA good guide transforms the visit. Audio guides are a decent alternative.

Licensed guides are available at the entrance for roughly ₹500 to ₹800 for a 2 hour tour. A good guide genuinely transforms the visit. Without one, you are looking at rooms. With one, you are hearing four centuries of stories. If hiring a guide, agree on the fee, duration, and language before starting. The audio guide (around ₹200) is a decent alternative if you prefer going at your own pace. Available in English, German, and Spanish.

What to carryComfortable shoes, water, and your camera for the courtyards

Comfortable walking shoes (the floors are uneven in places). Water, especially in summer. A light jacket if visiting in December or January mornings. Your camera for the courtyards (photography is restricted inside museum sections). Student ID if applicable, for a discounted entry.

Photography rulesCourtyards yes, museum sections no

Photography is allowed in most courtyard areas but prohibited inside the museum galleries and the Crystal Gallery. Still cameras are generally fine in the open areas. Video cameras may have an additional charge. Check signage as you go. The best photo spots are Mor Chowk and the upper balcony overlooking Lake Pichola.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is City Palace Udaipur?

City Palace is in the old city of Udaipur, Rajasthan, on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola. It is about 2 to 3 km from Udaipur City Railway Station and roughly 22 to 24 km from Maharana Pratap Airport.

What are the timings of City Palace?

The palace is generally open daily from 9:30 AM. Closing time varies between sources, often reported as 5:30 PM, sometimes later in summer. Timings may differ slightly between seasons. Ticket counters generally close about 30 minutes before closing. Confirm current timings before your visit, especially during holidays.

How much is the entry fee for City Palace Udaipur?

The palace uses a tiered ticketing system. The museum ticket for Indian adults is roughly ₹300 to ₹450. Foreign visitors generally pay ₹600 to ₹1,200. A basic complex entry ticket costs around ₹50 but only covers the outer courtyards, not the museum. The Crystal Gallery is a separate ticket, around ₹500. Student discounts are usually available with valid ID. Fees are updated periodically, so recheck before your visit.

How much time should I spend at City Palace?

Two to three hours for the main palace and museum. Add another hour for the Crystal Gallery and Durbar Hall. A rushed 90 minute visit is possible but you will miss the museum sections and the upper level lake views. Three hours at a comfortable pace is the sweet spot.

Is City Palace open on holidays?

It is generally open all seven days. It may close on Holi and Diwali. Confirm before visiting during major festivals.

Can I buy tickets online?

Yes, tickets can be booked through the official City Palace website or purchased at the gate. For peak season visits (November to February), arriving early or booking online can save you a 30 to 45 minute queue.

Is City Palace suitable for seniors and wheelchair users?

Yes. Wheelchairs, ramps, and lifts are available in parts of the complex. There is a fair amount of walking, but the pace is entirely your own. Comfortable shoes are important as some surfaces are uneven.

Can I visit City Palace and Lake Pichola boat ride in one day?

Absolutely, and most visitors do. City Palace in the morning (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM), lunch at one of the old city rooftop restaurants, and a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola (generally 5:00 to 7:00 PM). The boat ghat is about 200 metres from the palace, so no transport needed between the two.

Is photography allowed inside City Palace?

Photography is allowed in most courtyard areas but prohibited inside the museum galleries and the Crystal Gallery. Still cameras are generally fine in the open areas. Video cameras may have an additional charge. Check signage as you go.

How is City Palace Udaipur different from City Palace Jaipur?

Both are grand heritage complexes, but Udaipur's is larger, more layered architecturally, and the Lake Pichola setting makes it hard to match. Jaipur's is in the heart of the Pink City with easier access and a different feel. If you are doing a Rajasthan circuit, both are worth seeing, but Udaipur's palace rewards more time.

Do I need a guide at City Palace?

Not strictly, but a good guide transforms the visit. Without one, you are looking at rooms. With one, you are hearing four centuries of stories about the Mewar dynasty. Licensed guides cost roughly ₹500 to ₹800 for a 2 hour tour. Audio guides are available for around ₹200 in English, German, and Spanish.

What is the best time of day to visit City Palace?

Arrive by 9:30 AM when the gates open. Large tour groups and crowds typically arrive from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Early morning means shorter queues, cooler temperatures (important in summer), and better light for photos in the courtyards.
