Betaab Valley Pahalgam
A wide meadow at about 2,530 metres where the Lidder river runs cold through open grassland, backed by pine forest and snow capped peaks. Named after a 1983 Bollywood film, visited by almost everyone who comes to Pahalgam. The most photogenic of the three sub valleys, and the easiest to enjoy. Walk to the far end past the entrance crowds, sit by the river, and you will understand why film crews keep coming back. Entry roughly Rs 100. Takes 1 to 2 hours.

What makes it special
Betaab Valley is Pahalgam's most visited side valley, and for most visitors on the standard sightseeing circuit, it is the highlight. It sits at about 2,530 metres between the Pir Panjal and Zanskar ranges, roughly 7 to 8 km from Pahalgam town centre along the road to Chandanwari. The Lidder river runs clean and cold through the centre of a wide, open meadow backed by pine and deodar forest, with snow on the peaks behind.
The name is not ancient. Until 1983, this was called Hajan Valley (or Hagoon). Then Rahul Rawail shot the Bollywood film Betaab here, starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. The film was a hit, the song sequences in the meadow went everywhere, and tourists started asking to be taken to the Betaab valley. The name stuck. Today it is official on every signboard and map. Worth knowing: the iconic 'Bobby Hut' from the 1973 movie is actually located in Gulmarg, though local guides often mix the two up.
It helps to set expectations: Betaab Valley is a beautifully managed tourist park today. There is a gated entrance, paved walking paths built by the JKTDA, ticket counters, and vendors inside. It is not wilderness. It is a well kept, accessible green space with excellent mountain views and a river running through. If you are expecting raw, untouched landscape, Aru Valley (12 km further upstream) is closer to that. But if you want a beautiful, easy, family friendly stop where you can walk along a river, sit on the grass, take photos, and spend a comfortable hour or two without any physical effort, Betaab delivers exactly that.
The valley is part of the Pahalgam union taxi sightseeing system. Outside vehicles, including your Srinagar taxi, are generally not allowed on the sub valley roads. You hire a union taxi from Pahalgam for a circuit covering Betaab, Aru, and Chandanwari. The combined fare runs roughly Rs 2,300 to 3,000 for the day. You can also book Betaab alone for less.
Entry fee is approximately Rs 100 per adult and Rs 50 per child (as of recent reports, though this can change). Cash only at the gate.
One practical tip most pages miss: the crowd piles up near the entrance and the first wooden bridge. Walk past it. The meadow opens up further in, and the quieter sections along the river, past the silver birch area, are where the valley actually looks like the film stills. Morning visits are calmer. Saturdays and holidays are significantly busier.
If you are planning a full Kashmir trip, our Kashmir package covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam includes Pahalgam sightseeing that covers Betaab Valley.
Quick answers
- What is Betaab Valley?
- A wide, open meadow at about 2,530 metres, 7 km from Pahalgam, named after the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab. The most visited and most photogenic of Pahalgam's three sub valleys. 1 to 2 hours is enough.
- Should I visit Betaab Valley or Aru Valley?
- Betaab is more polished, more accessible, and more immediately impressive for photos. Paved paths, easy access, ideal for families. Aru is quieter, less developed, and the gateway to multi day treks (Tarsar Marsar, Kolahoi). If you want a quick, easy, beautiful stop, Betaab. If you want trekking or camping, Aru. The standard union taxi circuit covers both in a day.
- When is the best time to visit Betaab Valley?

Spring
April to May
Snow on peaks, green meadow, the most photogenic month is April
- Temperature
- ~3 to 18°C, cold mornings
- Crowds
- Moderate. Growing through May.
- Honest advice
- April is the best month for photos. Snow on peaks plus green meadow.
April is the standout month. Snow is still visible on the peaks behind the valley while the meadow is turning from brown to a fresh pale green. The combination is more photogenic than full summer green. May brings full colour and the first wildflowers. Mornings are cold but clear. Crowds are manageable.
- Recommended
Summer
June to August
Lush green, peak crowds, come on weekday mornings
- Temperature
- ~10 to 25°C, warm days
- Crowds
- High, especially weekends.
- What to carry
- Sunscreen, light rain layer in July and August
Full summer green. The meadow is lush, the river is flowing well, and visitors are at their peak. Weekends and holidays get busy. Visit on a weekday morning if you can. July and August can bring rain, which makes the paths slippery but also empties the crowd.
- Recommended
Autumn
September to November
Golden light, autumn colours, fewer visitors
- Temperature
- ~3 to 20°C, cooling through November
- Crowds
- Low.
- What to carry
- Warm layers
September and October are excellent. The crowds thin out, the light turns golden, and the surrounding trees add autumn colour. November gets cold but the valley is still accessible. This is arguably the most atmospheric season, though less conventionally photogenic than spring.
Winter
December to March
Cold, quiet, white peaks, brown meadow
- Temperature
- ~-6 to 5°C, cold
- Access
- Generally accessible. Paths can be icy.
- What to carry
- Heavy warm layers, warm shoes
Cold but accessible. The meadow turns brown and the peaks are white. Fewer visitors mean a quieter experience, but the entry infrastructure may be reduced. Worth it if you enjoy winter landscapes.

45 minutes to 1.5 hoursThe paved paths run alongside the Lidder river through the meadow. The walk from the entrance to the far end takes about 20 to 30 minutes at a stroll. Pony ride along the river
20 to 40 minutesHorses are available for hire inside the valley. You can ride along the river, and some operators let you ride through the shallow parts of the Lidder. Negotiate the price before you start. Expect roughly Rs 300 to 700 for a short ride, depending on duration and bargaining.

Mornings are better. The valley fills up by midday, especially on Saturdays and holidays. Come early for photos and a quieter experience.
How Betaab fits the Pahalgam circuitBetaab is the easiest and most polished. Aru is quieter. Chandanwari is the most remote. All three in one day.
Betaab is the most accessible of the three Pahalgam sub valleys. It is also the most managed and the most crowded. If you can only visit one, it is the safest choice for families and anyone who wants an easy, photogenic experience.
Aru is the quietest and the trekking base. Less polished, more natural. Better for campers and walkers.
Chandanwari is the road head for the Amarnath Yatra, further upstream. The glacier views and the river gorge are worth the drive, but it is the most remote of the three.
The standard union taxi circuit covers all three in a day. Most visitors start with Betaab, then Aru, then Chandanwari. You can reverse the order to end at Betaab for afternoon light.
Who Betaab suitsBest for families, couples, and easy sightseeing. Not a trekking destination.

Why is it called Betaab Valley?
The valley was originally called Hajan Valley or Hagoon. After the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab, starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, was shot here, tourists started asking guides to take them to where it was filmed. The name stuck and eventually became official.
