Apharwat Peak Gulmarg
The mountain the Gulmarg Gondola takes you to, at nearly 4,000 metres. Snow on the ground for most of the year. The Pir Panjal range in every direction. One of the highest cable car rides on the planet. In winter, some of Asia's best skiing terrain. In summer, the highest maggi you will ever eat. Phase 2 closes for weather more often than it runs, so go early, book online, and do not be heartbroken if Kongdoori is as far as you get. It is still worth the trip.
- Summit at 4,390 m, gondola top station at about 3,980 m
- Reached by Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 from Kongdoori
- One of the highest cable car systems in the world
- Snow for most of the year, even in summer
- World class skiing terrain (December to March)
- Phase 2 is weather dependent, closes frequently
- Altitude sickness possible, move slowly
- Book gondola tickets online in advance
What makes it special
Apharwat Peak is the mountain that the Gulmarg Gondola takes you to. The summit sits at about 4,390 metres, but you do not climb that. The Phase 2 gondola drops you at roughly 3,950 to 3,980 metres, on the shoulder of the mountain, and that is high enough. At this altitude, the air is thin, the wind is constant, snow covers the ground for most of the year, and on a clear day you can see deep into the Pir Panjal range and, from certain angles, across toward the Line of Control.
Here is the practical reality. For most visitors to Gulmarg, Apharwat means one thing: the Phase 2 gondola ride. You buy a ticket, ride the cable car from Kongdoori (the Phase 1 mid station at about 3,050 metres) up to the top station, step out into cold wind and snow, spend 30 minutes to 2 hours walking around, taking photos, playing in the snow, eating maggi at one of the highest food stalls in India, and then ride back down. That is the experience. And it is genuinely worth it, because the scale of what you see at nearly 4,000 metres is different from anything at the meadow level below.
For skiers and snowboarders, this is where the real terrain is. The Phase 2 zone offers long, steep, off piste runs that are among the best in Asia. Winter (December to March) brings deep powder. Professional and serious amateur skiers come from around the world for this. Guided backcountry skiing is available through certified operators in Gulmarg. If you are not a skier, this does not apply to you, but it is worth knowing that the people in the gondola with you in January are not all tourists. Some are here for some of the best skiing on the continent.
The honest framing for non skiing visitors. Phase 2 is weather dependent. It closes regularly for high wind, low visibility, avalanche control, or heavy snow. You can buy a ticket and still not ride because the gondola shuts down mid morning. This happens often. If Phase 2 is your priority, go early, book online if possible, and accept that it may not operate on your day. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) runs more reliably and still gives you snow play, views, and a good experience. Do not plan your entire Gulmarg trip around Phase 2 being open.
Altitude sickness is a real consideration. You go from Gulmarg at about 2,650 metres to nearly 4,000 metres in a 12 minute gondola ride. Your body does not acclimatise in 12 minutes. Some visitors feel breathless, dizzy, or nauseous at the top. Move slowly, stay hydrated, and do not overexert. If you feel unwell, go back down. People with heart or respiratory conditions, small children, and elderly visitors should seriously consider sticking to Phase 1.
Tickets sell out, especially during peak season and clear weather days. Booking online in advance is strongly recommended. Phase 2 tickets are separate from Phase 1. A combined ticket may be available. Prices vary by season and can change, so check the current rates on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal or at the counter.
If you are planning a Kashmir trip that includes Gulmarg, our Kashmir package covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam includes the Gulmarg experience.
Quick answers
- What is Apharwat Peak?
- Apharwat is the mountain above Gulmarg that you reach via the Gondola Phase 2 cable car. The top station sits at about 3,950 to 3,980 metres. At this altitude, you get panoramic Himalayan views, year round snow, and (in winter) some of Asia's best skiing terrain. For non skiers, it is a 2 to 3 hour experience: ride up, walk around in the snow, take photos, eat maggi at nearly 4,000 metres, and ride back down. Phase 2 closes frequently for weather, so it is not guaranteed on any given day.
- Will Phase 2 be open when I visit?
- Phase 2 is entirely weather dependent and closes regularly for wind, visibility, and avalanche control. Phase 1 (Kongdoori at 3,050 m) runs more reliably and still offers snow, views, and activities. The honest advice: do not build your Gulmarg plans around Phase 2 being open. If it runs, great. If not, Phase 1 is still a good time.
- When is the best time to visit Apharwat Peak?
- December to March for skiing and deep snow. April to June for snow at the top with easier weather. July to September for clear views with less snow. Phase 2 is weather dependent in all seasons. Book tickets online and go early in the day for the best chance of riding.

Winter
December to March
Skiing season. Deep snow. Extreme cold. Phase 2 closures for avalanche control.
- Temperature
- ~-15 to 5°C at the top station. Much colder with wind chill.
- Crowds
- International skiers and Indian tourists. Gondola queues can be long on powder days.
- Honest advice
- If you are not skiing, come for the snow experience but accept that Phase 2 may close. Phase 1 is still excellent.
This is skiing and snowboarding season. Deep powder, long runs, and some of the best high altitude skiing in Asia. The gondola may close for avalanche control but operates regularly for skiers when conditions allow. Non skiers can still enjoy snow play, but be prepared for extreme cold (well below freezing, with wind chill) and limited visibility on stormy days.
- Recommended
Spring
April to June
Snow at the top, milder weather, best for non skier visitors
- Temperature
- ~-5 to 10°C at the top station
- Crowds
- High. Peak tourist season for Gulmarg.
- What to carry
- Warm jacket, gloves, sunglasses, waterproof shoes, sunscreen
Snow lingers at the top well into June. The weather is less extreme than winter but still cold. This is a good window for non skiers who want snow without the deep freeze. Phase 2 still closes for wind and visibility, but runs more frequently than in deep winter. The Alpather Lake trek becomes possible by late May or June.
Summer
July to September
Clear views when clouds cooperate, less snow, good for the Alpather Lake trek
- Temperature
- ~2 to 15°C at the top station
- Crowds
- Moderate.
- Honest advice
- July and August can be cloudy and rainy. September is better for clear views.
Snow mostly gone from the lower slopes. The top station may still have patches. Clear views. Warmer but still cool. The Alpather Lake trek is best in this window. Phase 2 runs more frequently but monsoon clouds can obscure the view. July and August are the least recommended months.
Autumn
October to November
First snow, few visitors, weather increasingly unpredictable
- Temperature
- ~-8 to 8°C
- Crowds
- Very low.
- What to carry
- Full winter gear
Early snowfall arrives. The gondola may start having more weather closures. Few visitors. The views can be spectacular on clear days as the peaks get their first fresh snow. A transitional season that can be excellent or frustrating depending on the weather.
Things to see & do
4 things worth your time at Apharwat Peak Gulmarg.
Gondola Phase 2 ride to the top station
2 to 3 hours (including waiting and ride time)The main reason most visitors come. The cable car takes about 12 minutes from Kongdoori to the top station. At the top, you step out at nearly 4,000 metres into cold, wind, and (usually) snow. The 360 degree view of the Pir Panjal range is the highlight. On a clear day, it extends to distant peaks and toward the Line of Control. Book tickets online for best slot availability. Arrive early to minimise queue time.
Snow play and sledging at the top
30 minutes to 1 hourSnow persists at the top station for most of the year, sometimes even into June. You can play in the snow, make snowballs, sledge on the slopes, and rent snow boots and jackets from vendors. This is basic snow play, not organised adventure sports. Fun for families, as long as children handle the altitude well.
Skiing and snowboarding (winter)
Full dayWinter (December to March) is when the serious skiers arrive. The slopes from the Phase 2 zone offer long descents of 2,000+ vertical metres through powder, bowls, and tree runs down to Gulmarg. Guided backcountry skiing with certified operators is the standard. Gear rental and lessons are available in Gulmarg. This is advanced terrain. Beginners should stick to the groomed runs near Phase 1 and the chairlift zone.
Trek to Alpather Lake (seasonal)
3 to 5 hours round tripAlpather Lake (also called Frozen Lake) sits at about 4,100 metres, accessible by a trek from the Phase 2 area in late spring through autumn when the snow clears enough to walk. The lake stays frozen until roughly June. The trek is about 3 to 4 km one way over uneven, rocky, sometimes snowy terrain. Not a casual walk. Proper shoes and warm clothes are essential. A guide is recommended.
Know before you visit Apharwat Peak Gulmarg
The practical bits, from people who have been.
Phase 2 is not guaranteedPhase 2 closes frequently for weather. Book online. Go early. Phase 1 is the reliable backup.
Phase 2 closes often. High wind, poor visibility, avalanche control, and heavy snowfall all cause closures. This can happen on any day in any season. Check the gondola's operating status on the morning of your visit before queuing. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) is more reliable and still gives you a good experience.
Book tickets online. Peak season and clear weather days sell out. Online booking secures a time slot. Walk up tickets are available but risky on busy days.
Go early. The gondola typically operates from about 10 AM to 5 PM, but Phase 2 often closes by early afternoon even on good days. Morning rides give you the best chance of making it to the top.
Altitude and healthAltitude effects are common. Move slowly, stay hydrated. Skip Phase 2 if you have health concerns.
You gain over 1,300 metres of altitude in 20 minutes (Phase 1 plus Phase 2). That is faster than your body can adjust. Common symptoms: breathlessness, headache, mild nausea, fatigue.
What to do: Move slowly at the top. Do not run or exert yourself. Stay hydrated. Eat light snacks. If symptoms worsen (severe headache, vomiting, confusion), go back down immediately.
Who should skip Phase 2: People with heart conditions, severe respiratory issues, very young children (under 5), and pregnant women. Phase 1 at about 3,050 m is a safer, gentler option.
What to wear and carryLayer up. Waterproof shoes essential. Snow gear rentals available. Only maggi and tea at the top.
Dress in layers. The temperature at the top can be below freezing even in May. Wind makes it feel much colder. Bring a proper jacket, gloves, and a hat. Sunglasses are essential because of snow glare.
Wear proper shoes. Snow boots or waterproof shoes with grip. The ground at the top is icy and uneven. Regular sneakers will get wet and slippery.
Snow gear rental is available at the base and at Kongdoori. Boots, jackets, and snow suits can be rented for a few hundred rupees. Quality varies.
Food at the top is limited to a few stalls selling maggi, tea, and snacks. One stall claims to be the world's highest pizzeria. Do not count on it for a proper meal.

How do I reach Apharwat Peak?
By the Gulmarg Gondola cable car. Phase 1 goes from Gulmarg base to Kongdoori (about 3,050 m). Phase 2 goes from Kongdoori to the Apharwat top station (about 3,980 m). The Phase 2 ride takes about 12 minutes. There is no road or walking trail for casual visitors.

December to March for skiing and deep snow. April to June for snow at the top with milder conditions. Summer (July to September) offers clear views but less snow. October and November are transitional, cold, with early snowfall. Phase 2 is weather dependent year round.
Does the Phase 2 gondola close often?
Frequently. Phase 2 closes for high wind, low visibility, avalanche control, and heavy snowfall. This can happen any day, any season. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) runs more reliably. Do not plan your Gulmarg trip assuming Phase 2 will be open on your specific day.
Can I get altitude sickness at Apharwat?
Yes. You ascend from about 2,650 m to nearly 4,000 m in 12 minutes. Your body does not acclimatise that fast. Breathlessness, headache, dizziness, and nausea are common. Move slowly, drink water, avoid running or heavy exertion. If symptoms worsen, go back down immediately.
Is Apharwat suitable for children and seniors?
With caution. Children over about 8 to 10 generally handle it, but watch for altitude effects. Very young children, elderly visitors, and anyone with heart or respiratory conditions should consider staying at Phase 1. The wind and cold at the top station can be harsh for small children.
Is there snow at Apharwat in summer?
Yes, for most of the year. Snow typically persists at the top station well into June, sometimes later. December to March is full winter snow. Even in April and May, there is enough snow for playing and sledging.
How much time do I need for Apharwat?
About 2 to 3 hours total, including queue time, the ride up, time at the top (30 minutes to 2 hours), and the ride down. Add more if queues are long or if you include Phase 1 activities at Kongdoori.
Is Apharwat good for skiing?
Yes. The slopes from Phase 2 offer some of the best skiing in Asia, with long off piste descents through powder, bowls, and tree runs. December to March is the season. Guided backcountry skiing with certified operators is the standard for advanced terrain. Gear rental and lessons are available in Gulmarg for all levels.
