Best Season
Late December to March, once the winter route through Kinnaur is open and while snow conditions allow
Ideal For
Couples, families, friends, solo travellers, and adventure seekers who want real winter Spiti with a fixed plan and full on-ground support

Know Before You Go

  • In winter, Spiti is reached from the Kinnaur side and the trip runs as an out and back on the same route. Kunzum Pass and the Manali side stay snowed shut, so there is no Chandratal and no Manali crossing on this trip
  • The high villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komik are covered only if the roads are cleared and safe. In deep winter this is weather-permitting and cannot be promised. If they are not open, the day stays around Kaza with safe winter experiences
  • Spiti is very high and very cold. Drink water, eat light, avoid alcohol, do not overexert, and listen to your trip captain or coordinator. The slow climb through Kinnaur helps your body adjust
  • Pack seriously for sub-zero cold, especially for the nights in Kaza and Tabo. Think heavy layers, a proper down jacket, thermals, gloves, a warm cap, and good shoes
  • Winter drives are slower because of ice, snow, and short daylight. Start early and stay flexible. All times are rough guesses
  • The route can change at short notice based on snowfall and safety. Safety comes first, and we adjust sightseeing and stays as per the conditions on the day
  • Phone network is weak and patchy after Kaza, and ATMs are not reliable in winter. Carry enough cash
  • Rooms have heating, but hot water and power can be limited at times in remote winter stays. This is normal for Spiti in the cold months
  • The oxygen cylinder is for emergencies and you pay only if you use it. It does not replace a doctor. If you have heart or breathing problems, check with your doctor before you book

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for this Winter Spiti Expedition?

January to March is the sweet spot for a true winter Spiti. This is when the valley is under snow, the rivers begin to freeze, and Kaza feels like a proper cold desert in winter. Snow decides which roads are open, so some flexibility always helps. December can also work at the start of the season, but the deep winter feel is strongest from January onwards.

How is this different from the summer Spiti circuit?

In summer, the full circle goes in from Shimla and comes out through Manali over Kunzum Pass, with Chandratal camping. In winter, Kunzum and the Manali side are snowed shut, so this trip goes in through Kinnaur and comes back the same way. There is no Chandratal and no Manali crossing in winter. What you get instead is Spiti under snow, which is a quieter and completely different experience.

Is this a group tour?

Yes. This is a fixed departure group expedition on set dates, run in shared 4x4 vehicles. It suits solo travellers, couples, families and friends who want a ready plan and full support on the ground.

What vehicle will we travel in?

All the mountain driving is in a 4x4 fitted with snow chains, usually a Jimny or Scorpio N, chosen to suit the group size. The Volvo covers the Delhi to Shimla and Shimla to Delhi legs.

Do we get a trip captain?

This expedition runs only as small Micro or Small groups, up to 10 people, so every group is looked after by a trip coordinator and an experienced local driver who knows the winter route.

Is the high villages day (Langza, Hikkim, Komik) guaranteed?

No. In deep winter this depends on snow clearance and road safety. If the roads are open, we do the circuit from Kaza. If not, the day stays around Kaza with safe winter experiences, and nothing is forced.

Is Chandratal covered in winter?

No. Chandratal and Kunzum Pass are closed and snowbound in winter, so they are not part of this trip. They are only reachable in the summer season.

How cold does it get?

Expect sub-zero temperatures, more so at night in Kaza and Tabo. Day temperatures depend on the sun, wind, and snowfall. Warm layers are essential.

What should I pack?

Heavy layers, a proper down jacket, thermals, warm gloves, a woollen cap, thick socks, and good closed shoes. A power bank, lip balm and moisturiser help too, as the cold and dry air can be harsh.

Is this good for first timers?

Yes, as long as you are comfortable with cold weather and long drives, and you follow the team's guidance. There is no hard trekking, but winter travel is slow and the cold is real.

Do I need any fitness level for this tour?

Basic fitness is enough. There is no intense trekking. The main demands are long drives, high altitude, and extreme cold, so come rested and hydrated.

What if roads close due to snow?

In winter Spiti, route changes can happen and safety always comes first. We adjust the sightseeing and stay points as per the real time conditions, and the team plans the route day by day.

What meals are included?

6 breakfasts and 6 dinners on the MAP plan, across your stays from Day 2 to Day 8. Lunches, snacks, and drinks are not included, and meals on the Volvo nights are on your own.

What about phone network and ATMs?

Network is weak and patchy after Kaza, and ATMs are not reliable in winter. Carry enough cash for the whole Spiti leg.

Can solo travellers join?

Yes. This is a group expedition, so it works well for solo travellers who want a fixed plan, a ready group, and support on the ground. A single room may cost extra and depends on availability.

How does the oxygen work?

There is an emergency oxygen cylinder in the vehicle on every trip, and you pay only if you use it. It is for emergencies and does not replace a doctor. If you have heart or breathing issues, please check with your doctor before booking.
