Know Before You Go

  • Winter Spiti is a weather led Himalayan expedition, not a regular hill holiday with snow added on. Temperatures stay well below freezing, many hotels and businesses close for the season, water lines can freeze, and fresh snow can change the plan overnight. That unpredictability is part of what makes it special, and it is why the stays, amenities, and sightseeing here are kept flexible
  • This is a fixed departure group expedition, not a private trip. The Volvo, the mountain 4x4 vehicles, and the accommodation are all shared as per your booking. A private vehicle is not included. Departures are small, up to 10 travellers, spread across the required vehicles
  • On the morning you reach Shimla, the freshen up after the overnight Volvo is quick and in a common area, usually at the breakfast stop. There is no dedicated room, hotel, or shower for this, and it is often time bound. Dedicated showers can be arranged at an extra cost if you ask in advance. Breakfast in Shimla is at your own expense
  • The mountain vehicle may be a Jimny, a Scorpio N 4WD, or another confirmed 4x4, chosen by the group and luggage, and the model and seating are shared before departure. Please note a Jimny has four seats in total, including the driver and any accompanying staff, so it is not four guest seats plus a driver
  • The 4x4 and snow chains greatly improve what we can drive in winter, but no vehicle can cross an official closure, deep fresh snow, black ice, or an unsafe slope. Black ice can form even without snowfall and is often not visible, so drives are slower than a maps app suggests and days may start early. Please do not rush the driver. The final call on vehicle movement stays with the driver, the team, and the local authorities
  • Even when the main Shimla to Kaza road is open, the smaller approach roads to Chitkul, the high villages, and some monasteries can stay blocked by fresh snow or ice. So every sightseeing point is subject to weather and road access, and the team always picks the safest practical plan for the day rather than forcing a checklist
  • Nako is an early high altitude overnight stay, and this is the most important thing to understand about this trip. Nako sits at about 3,660 metres, and the plan reaches it after just one night in Sangla, without an extra Kalpa or Tabo night on the way up. Share any past altitude problems and relevant medical conditions before you book. If you need a slower climb, please choose a different itinerary
  • Winter does not remove altitude sickness. Tell the coordinator at once about any headache, nausea, unusual tiredness, dizziness, or breathlessness, and do not keep climbing with symptoms that have not settled. Worsening signs, breathlessness at rest, confusion, or trouble walking need urgent care and a descent when it is safe to move. There is no hospital at Nako, so we take this seriously
  • Chitkul is a planned stop on Day 3, reached via Rakcham, with time to enjoy the snow. In winter, heavy snowfall can block the last stretch beyond Rakcham. If that happens, the team covers the best safely accessible part of the Baspa valley instead. Either way this is a long day, so the priority stays on reaching Nako safely in daylight rather than driving after dark
  • Your one full Kaza sightseeing day is planned to cover the high village circuit in order: Key, Kibber, and Chicham first on the lower arm above the Spiti river, then the higher plateau villages Langza, Komic, and Hikkim, always weather and road permitting. The team sets the order for the day and covers what is safely open, so treat the full list as the plan when conditions allow rather than a cast iron guarantee. Reaching a village does not mean every monastery, building, or post office will be open
  • In peak winter many regular hotels are shut, so your stay may be an operational homestay, guest house, or winter hotel, chosen by the destination, weather, and availability. Electric blankets are provided wherever available and keep the bed warm, but that is not the same as a centrally heated room. Room heaters are only at some properties and may be chargeable, since power supply and load are limited in winter
  • Water pipes and tanks can freeze, so hot water is usually given in buckets, about 2 to 3 buckets per person, not as continuous running water, and a daily shower may not always be practical in extreme cold. Some stays have attached washrooms, but in deep cold only some lines stay working, so you may use a shared operational washroom or be shifted to a working one. This is frozen plumbing at altitude, not a cleanliness issue, and water is scarce, so please use it carefully
  • Electricity is usually there in inhabited areas, but expect the odd power cut or low voltage. Mobile network, internet, UPI, and cards can also go patchy or drop in remote stretches and bad weather. Carry a power bank, charge whenever you can, keep batteries and the power bank warm since the cold drains them fast, and carry enough emergency cash rather than relying only on your phone
  • In winter many cafes and shops close and supplies are limited, so meals at your stays are simple, warm, home style food. Between settlements there are few cafes, washrooms, ATMs, or shops, and some stay shut, so use washrooms when the team suggests and carry your own snacks, like energy bars, chocolate, and dry fruit, for the long driving days
  • For safety, use only the heating the property provides. Never bring an outdoor gas stove, a charcoal burner, or a camping heater into a room, as this can be deadly in a closed space
  • This trip goes in and comes back through the Kinnaur approach only. Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, and a Manali crossing are not part of a winter expedition, because the Kunzum route is closed by snow in winter. The Shimla approach is described as almost all weather, but it is not free from closures, and the road can be single lane and rough in parts
  • Fresh snowfall can occasionally stop movement until roads are cleared and considered safe, so a winter expedition can run behind the planned schedule. Keep three to four extra days free after the scheduled return, and do not book a tight or important flight, train, exam, or meeting right after the trip. This does not promise a closure will clear in that time, but it protects you
  • Snowfall, snow cover, frozen rivers, frozen waterfalls, and clear night skies are all natural and cannot be promised for your exact dates. Winter Spiti usually brings severe cold and seasonal snow, but the amount varies with the weather. Nako Lake is viewed from safe ground, and walking, skating, or driving on frozen lakes and rivers is not included, as it is dangerous
  • Pack for real winter. Bring thermal base layers, a fleece or down layer, a proper winter jacket, warm lower layers, waterproof or snow ready shoes, several warm socks, gloves, a woollen cap, a neck warmer, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturiser. Ordinary city winter clothing is not enough here. Carry an insulated water bottle, keep drinking water at altitude even when you do not feel thirsty, and go easy on alcohol while your body is still adjusting
  • Spiti is remote, so basic local medical help exists in the valley but it is not like a big city, and snow can add time to reach it. Carry all your personal medicines with a few spare doses and tell the team about important medical needs. Anyone with heart, breathing, or other conditions affected by cold or altitude should check with a doctor before booking. Carry a valid government photo ID for every traveller. Foreign nationals must contact the team before booking, since the Kinnaur to Spiti stretch is a sensitive border belt and needs an Inner Line Permit for foreign travellers, while Indian travellers do not
  • The oxygen cylinder carried with the group is for emergencies and you pay only if you use it. It does not replace a doctor and does not make it safe to keep climbing when someone is unwell

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the nine day expedition?

This eight day version stays in Nako on the way up, then continues through Tabo to Kaza. The nine day expedition instead adds separate overnight stays in Kalpa and Tabo before Kaza, which is a gentler climb. Both give you two Kaza nights and one full sightseeing day. If you want a slower ascent, the nine day trip suits better.

Is this a private trip?

No. This is a fixed departure group expedition. The Volvo, the mountain 4x4 vehicles, and the accommodation are shared as per your booking. A private vehicle is not included. Departures are small, up to 10 travellers, spread across the required vehicles.

Which 4x4 will we travel in?

The vehicle may be a Jimny, a Scorpio N 4WD, or another confirmed 4x4, and the model and seating are shared before departure. Please note a Jimny has four seats in total, including the driver and any accompanying staff, so it is not four guest seats plus a driver. This is worth knowing when you picture space and luggage.

If we travel in a 4x4, can every destination still be covered?

A capable 4x4 with snow chains improves access a lot, but no vehicle can cross an official closure, deep fresh snow, black ice, or an unsafe slope. Final movement always depends on the road and weather on the day, and the driver and team decide what is safe.

Is this suitable for first time visitors?

Not automatically. The early Nako overnight, the cold, and the long transfers need thought even though there is no trekking. Nako is high, at about 3,660 metres, and the plan reaches it after just one night in Sangla. Please discuss your health and any past altitude experience with the team. A slower itinerary may suit you better.

Is Winter Spiti for everyone?

It is ideal if you are comfortable with sub zero cold, simple remote stays, long mountain drives, and a bit of unpredictability. You come for snow covered landscapes, quiet villages, local homestays, and one of India's most remote inhabited regions in its rawest season. If you need uninterrupted heating, running hot water, and a fixed daily schedule, peak winter Spiti may not suit you. If you are happy to trade a little comfort for an extraordinary experience, it is unforgettable.

How high is Nako and why does it matter?

Nako is at about 3,660 metres, and this trip reaches it after only one night in Sangla, without an extra Kalpa or Tabo night on the way up. That is a real altitude jump. Tell the coordinator at once about any headache, nausea, or unusual tiredness, do not keep climbing with symptoms that have not settled, and be ready to descend if they worsen. There is no hospital at Nako, so we take this seriously.

What happens if Nako is unavailable or someone feels unwell?

The team may need to change the overnight halt, stop the ascent, or arrange medical help. This can change the trip duration. Another stay is not automatically an easy substitute within the same eight day schedule, so please keep some buffer days and travel insurance.

Is Chitkul included in the price?

Yes. Chitkul is a planned stop on Day 3, reached via Rakcham, with time to enjoy the snow. In winter, heavy snow can sometimes block the last stretch beyond Rakcham. If that happens, the team covers the best safely accessible part of the Baspa valley instead, and always keeps the priority on reaching Nako safely in daylight.

Can we freshen up after the overnight Volvo in Shimla?

Yes, but it is a quick freshen up in a common area, usually at the breakfast stop. There is no dedicated room, hotel, or shower included, and it is often time bound. If you want a dedicated shower or room, we can try to arrange it at an extra cost, so please tell us in advance.

Are Gue and Pin Valley included?

No. Gue and its mummy sit on a different side road that is usually frozen shut in winter, so we cannot commit to it, and Pin Valley is closed in the winter season. Dhankar is now included on the Tabo to Kaza leg, weather and road permitting, but only the monastery and viewpoint. The Dhankar Lake hike is not included, as it is a high trek that is not safe in deep winter.

Does one Kaza day cover every village?

The day is planned to cover the full high village circuit, Key, Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Komic, and Hikkim, always weather and road permitting. In winter the team sets the order for the day and covers what is safely open, so treat the full list as the plan when conditions allow rather than a cast iron guarantee. Reaching a village also does not mean every monastery, building, or post office will be open.

Can the high villages close even when the main road is open?

Yes. Even when the main Shimla to Kaza road is running, the smaller approach roads to Chitkul, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Kibber, and Chicham can stay blocked by fresh snow or ice. That is why every sightseeing point is subject to weather and road access.

What happens if a road closes?

The team decides whether to wait, change the halt, or turn back. A shortened sightseeing day may become a rest day. Any extra stays, meals, and transport are charged as per the written booking terms, and the scheduled return is not guaranteed. This is why we ask you to keep three to four extra days free after the return.

What are the winter facilities like?

Simpler than a city hotel, on purpose. Hot water may come in buckets, some properties use traditional dry toilets, and heating, washroom access, and any extra charges are confirmed for your actual stays before payment. Triple sharing may use an extra bed or mattress, and electricity and mobile service can be interrupted. Please never bring an outdoor gas stove, charcoal burner, or camping heater into a room.

Are room heaters included?

Only where the booked property includes them in its tariff. Separately billed heaters are extra. We share the heating arrangement for your confirmed stays before payment rather than promise the same facilities everywhere.

Does an electric blanket heat the whole room?

No. An electric blanket keeps the bed warm, which makes a big difference on a cold night, but it is not the same as central room heating. Rooms in peak winter Spiti should not be expected to feel like a heated city hotel. Room heaters are only at some properties and may be chargeable, depending on the power supply.

Will we get an attached washroom, and can we shower every day?

Some stays have attached washrooms, but in extreme cold only some plumbing lines stay working, so you may use a shared operational washroom or be moved to a working one. Hot water usually comes in buckets, about 2 to 3 per person, so a conventional daily shower may not always be practical. It is about frozen plumbing at altitude, not cleanliness, and water is a limited winter resource.

Will UPI and cards work, or should we carry cash?

Carry enough cash. Mobile network and internet can be patchy or drop in remote stretches and bad weather, and that also affects UPI and card payments. Treat cash as your main option once you are deep in the valley.

Is emergency oxygen included?

A cylinder is carried with the group, but use is charged separately under the package policy, and the charge is shared before booking. Oxygen does not replace medical care, and it does not make it safe to keep climbing when someone is unwell.

Is snowfall guaranteed?

No. Snowfall and snow cover depend on your dates and the recent weather, so we do not promise white landscapes at every stop. Nako Lake is viewed from safe ground when it is accessible, and walking, skating, or driving on frozen lakes and rivers is not included, since it is dangerous.

Does the trip go via Manali or Chandratal?

No. This trip enters and returns through the Kinnaur approach only. Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, and a Manali crossing are not part of a winter expedition, because the Kunzum route is closed by snow in winter. The Shimla approach is almost all weather but not free from closures.

Can solo travellers join?

Yes. Solo travellers can join a shared departure. Room pairing and any single room supplement are confirmed before payment. The starting price of Rs 25,999 is for triple sharing on the Delhi to Delhi option, and double sharing is available at an extra Rs 3,000.

Do foreign nationals need extra arrangements?

Yes. Foreign travellers must contact the team before booking, because the Kinnaur to Spiti stretch is a sensitive border belt and needs an Inner Line Permit for foreign nationals. Eligibility and processing must be checked in advance rather than left until the journey begins. Indian travellers do not need a permit for this route.

What should we pack?

Pack for real winter: thermals, an insulated jacket, gloves, a warm cap, suitable footwear, sunglasses, personal medicines, and a power bank. Use compact luggage, keep essential medicines with you, and carry enough cash, since ATMs, cards, and mobile payments can be unreliable in the valley. Also carry a valid government photo ID for every traveller.

Can the package price change?

The starting price of Rs 25,999 per person is for triple sharing on the Delhi to Delhi option, with GST included. Starting from Chandigarh saves Rs 2,000 and from Shimla saves Rs 3,000, and double sharing adds Rs 3,000. The final price depends on your start point and sharing choice, and is confirmed before payment.
