- Best Season
- Roughly mid May to October, when the trail and campsite are open and the weather is more settled. Late October and November are late season and run only if the trail, roads and camp are in good shape, as the route closes with early winter snow.
- Ideal For
- First time and regular trekkers comfortable with long uphill walks, cold nights and simple mountain stays. Solo travellers, couples and groups of friends are all welcome.
Know Before You Go
- This is a high mountain trek that gains real height in a short time. You should be comfortable with long uphill walks. If you are unsure, talk to us before you book.
- The main trek day is long. You climb to the campsite, then walk on towards the lake and temple at around 3,895 metres and return to camp. Keep a steady pace and follow your trek team.
- Late October and November are late season. We run the trek only if the trail, roads, weather and campsite are in good shape on your dates. Snow, a snow free trail, or temple access cannot be promised.
- Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a warm cap, trekking shoes with good grip, a headlamp, and a couple of reusable water bottles.
- Carry your overnight backpack to camp unless you have arranged luggage support. A light daypack is enough for the walk beyond camp.
- Arrange your lunch for the trek day before you leave the village. Do not count on finding an open cafe on the trail.
- Altitude can affect anyone. Tell your trek team if you feel a headache, nausea or dizziness, and do not climb higher while unwell. Serious signs need rest, descent and medical help.
- Mobile network is patchy in this part of Kinnaur and ATMs are limited beyond Shimla, so carry some cash.
- The return day mixes a trek descent with a long drive, so avoid tight flight, train or bus connections from Delhi.
- Carry a valid photo ID. Indian travellers do not need a special permit for this route, as the trailhead sits below the notified belt further inside Kinnaur.
- Respect local customs around the lake and temple, and carry your litter back with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Yulla Kanda?
Yulla Kanda is in the Rora Valley of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The trek starts from Yulla Khas village, also called Yulla village, and climbs to a high mountain lake and a Krishna temple at around 3,895 metres, believed to be the highest Krishna temple in the world.
Can I join the Yulla Kanda trek from Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla?
Yes. Pick the start point that suits you. Delhi travellers board the overnight Volvo and travel via Shimla. Chandigarh travellers also travel via Shimla, with the connecting transport confirmed in your quote. Shimla travellers join the group directly in Shimla.
What vehicle will we travel in?
Delhi travellers go to Shimla and back by overnight Volvo, with a Tempo Traveller on some peak dates so the group travels together. Chandigarh travellers travel via Shimla, with the connecting transport confirmed in your quote. In the mountains, between Shimla and Yulla Khas, you travel by a shared SUV, Sedan or Tempo Traveller, based on the batch size.
How much does the Yulla Kanda trek cost?
The Delhi to Delhi and Chandigarh to Chandigarh options are Rs 7,499 per person on triple sharing and Rs 8,999 on double sharing. Shimla to Shimla is Rs 1,000 less per person, as it skips the intercity bus leg. Your quote confirms the stay, Chandigarh connecting transport, taxes and final amount.
How many days do I need?
From Shimla the trek is 3 days and 2 nights. From Delhi it is 5 days and 4 nights, including the two overnight bus journeys. From Chandigarh it is similar to Delhi, depending on your connecting transport.
How difficult is the Yulla Kanda trek?
It is a moderate trek, but this short itinerary fits the main climb and the lake visit into a single day, so it needs decent stamina. If this is your first trek, talk to us about your fitness and the plan before you book.
How far is the Yulla Kanda trek?
The route from Yulla Khas to the lake is around 12 km one way. The exact distance depends on the roadhead and the route on the day. It is not a 12 km round trip.
When does this trek run?
We run fixed weekend departures from late October to mid November, after which the trail usually closes with early snow. Tell us your preferred weekend and start point and we will confirm the current batch. All mountain travel is condition based, so the plan can change for safety.
Where will we stay?
One night in a comfortable village homestay at Yulla Khas and one night in an alpine camp near Yulla Kanda. The camp uses tents with shared washrooms. We confirm your room and tent sharing before you pay, and if a particular property is full we use a similar one of the same standard.
Do we get a hotel room in Shimla on arrival?
No. On arrival in Shimla there is only a quick freshen up stop at a shared common area, not hotel rooms, and breakfast there is on your own. The included stays are the village homestay at Yulla Khas and the alpine camp near Yulla Kanda.
Is this good for solo travellers?
Yes, many travellers join solo. The group forms on the bus and the trip captain makes sure everyone feels included from Day 1. A solo booking does not automatically mean a private room or tent, but we sort out your sharing before you pay.
Does double sharing mean a private tent?
A private tent is confirmed only if it is written into your booking. Camp washrooms are shared by everyone. Double sharing is about your room and tent partner, not a private vehicle.
What meals are included?
Two breakfasts and two dinners, as per the itinerary. The breakfast stop on arrival in Shimla is on your own. Lunches, snacks, drinks and meals on the bus are extra. Carry or arrange a packed lunch for the trek day.
Will someone carry my luggage?
Porter or mule support is not included. Carry your own backpack to camp unless you arrange support in advance. For the walk beyond camp, a light daypack is enough.
Is there a guide and safety support?
A trip captain travels with the group, and a local trek team leads the trail. Ask us about the trek leader, first aid and any included equipment for your batch, and we will put it in your booking summary.
Is the bonfire guaranteed?
We plan a bonfire at camp, but it depends on the weather, the campsite and local permission on the day. If conditions do not allow it, we skip it for safety.
