Know Before You Go
- This is a remote experienced rider expedition, not a relaxed tourist ride. You must have prior mountain riding experience on 350cc to 450cc bikes. A short skill confirmation is part of joining. If you are not experienced, take the backup vehicle seat
- An armoured riding jacket and riding boots are mandatory and arranged by the rider. Rental is available on request. Without them, you will not ride the remote section
- Travel insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory. Arrange it and share proof before departure. A riding fitness and health declaration is also required because medical help is far
- Chanshal Pass, Dodra, and Kwar movement are completely weather and road dependent. On a bike, a wet or sleeting pass is more serious than in a vehicle, so the team will not push the crossing in bad weather. If the pass closes behind the group, the team holds it safely or arranges the safest return, and any genuine extra cost is shared as per the cost policy
- Day 4, the Chanshal crossing into Dodra, is the hardest day. The group stays close to the pass on Day 3 so Day 4 starts with a shorter approach and more daylight for the descent. For private groups, the crossing can be split across two shorter days
- The last reliable fuel is around Rohru. Reserve fuel is carried in the backup vehicle for the belt beyond, but start the remote section with a full tank. The backup vehicle may not always be right behind every bike on narrow sections, which is why the batch is small and regroup points are followed strictly
- The Dodra Kwar belt stay is basic. Simple rooms, simple food, limited facilities. Best case is one night in Dodra and one in Kwar, otherwise both nights in Dodra with Kwar as a day visit
- The road captain's call on riding, stopping, or shifting a rider or pillion to the backup vehicle is final. It is about safety, not skill judgement
- Keep your return flexible. Do not book a tight onward connection the morning you reach Delhi. Pack light with a rucksack or duffle, not a trolley. Carry rain gear, warm layers, medicines, power bank, cash, and ID
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this bike expedition beginner friendly?
No. This is not a beginner bike trip. It is for experienced riders who have already ridden 350cc to 450cc motorcycles on real mountain roads. A short skill confirmation by video or a quick check at the start is part of joining.
Why is this experienced riders only?
Because the Chanshal to Dodra Kwar section can be rough, narrow, broken, and remote. The route needs confidence, patience, clutch control, braking control, and mountain road awareness. This is not the trip to learn Himalayan riding.
What are the bike and pricing options?
Himalayan 411cc Solo (recommended for this route), Himalayan 450cc Solo (subject to availability), Himalayan 411cc Dual Rider (experienced riders only), Own Bike option, and Backup Vehicle Seat. Starting from Rs 39,999. The 450cc costs more than the 411cc. Solo costs more than dual. Own bike is priced differently since rental and fuel are not included. Backup seat is priced separately. Share your preference for an exact quote.
Can I bring my own bike?
Yes. Your bike must be in good condition and a basic condition check is mandatory before joining. Fuel for own bikes is not included, but reserve fuel logistics for the remote belt are coordinated by the team.
Is there a backup vehicle?
Yes. A backup vehicle moves from Shimla to Shimla carrying luggage, spare parts, reserve fuel, and backup seat guests. It supports emergencies and basic recovery where feasible. On narrow broken sections it may be slower than the bikes and not always right behind every rider, which is why the batch is small and regroup points are followed strictly.
What about fuel in the remote belt?
The last reliable fuel is around Rohru. Beyond Rohru towards Chanshal, Dodra, and Kwar there is effectively no dependable petrol. The team carries reserve fuel in the backup vehicle so the group does not run dry. Riders should still start the remote section with a full tank.
Is riding gear included?
Basic gear (helmet, knee guards, elbow guards, gloves) is included. An armoured riding jacket and riding boots are mandatory and must be arranged by the rider. Rental can be arranged on request. Without them, you will not be allowed to ride the remote section.
Can a pillion or non rider join?
A pillion can join only with an experienced rider, and must accept that on hard sections the road captain may ask them to shift to the backup vehicle. Non riders can choose the backup vehicle seat and experience the route without riding.
Why is Day 4 staged the way it is?
Day 4, the Chanshal crossing into Dodra, is the hardest day. Rider fatigue is a major cause of mountain accidents. So the group stays close to the pass on Day 3, making Day 4 start with a shorter approach and more daylight for the technical descent. For private groups, the crossing can be split across two shorter days.
Is Chanshal Pass guaranteed?
No. Reaching or crossing Chanshal depends on road, snow, rain, daylight, and road captain approval. On a bike, a wet or sleeting pass is more serious, so the team will not push it in bad weather. If closed, the team covers the best possible Pabbar Valley and Chanshal approach riding instead.
What if the pass closes while we are in Dodra Kwar?
The team holds the group safely until the road is fit to cross, or arranges the safest available return. In rare cases this can mean an extra night or a longer route, and genuine additional costs are shared as per the route and cost policy. This is why insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory and why we ask you to keep your return flexible.
Will we stay in both Dodra and Kwar?
Best case, yes. One night in Dodra and one in Kwar. If Kwar stay is not suitable or available, both nights may be in Dodra with Kwar as a day visit.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory for this expedition. Arrange it and share proof before departure. A riding fitness and health declaration is also required.
What are the meals?
Breakfast and dinner on all 5 stay nights. That is 10 meals. Volvo journey meals, lunches, and beverages are not included.
What is the best season?
Usually late June to September, with early October when the pass holds. We confirm departures only once the pass is open for the year. May and November depend on snow. July and August can be risky due to rain and landslides.
How many riders per batch?
This route is kept small. Micro batches are 4 to 6 bikes, small riding batches up to 8 bikes. Large bike groups are not run on this route because a small experienced group is far safer across Chanshal and the Dodra Kwar belt.
