Day inKharapathar / KotkhaiDays inRohru / Chirgaon (Pabbar Valley)Days inDodra / Kwar Belt

Highlights

  • A limited batch and private 4x4 expedition into one of the rawest sides of Himachal, covering Giri Ganga, Kuppar Bugyal, Chanshal Pass, Dodra, and Kwar
  • Travel the mountain route in a Jimny or Scorpio N 4x4. No large tempo traveller movement. A capable 4x4 gives better control and safety on these remote roads
  • Cross Chanshal Pass into the remote Dodra Kwar region, two separate villages of wooden homes, local temples, and quiet mountain life most people never reach
  • Hike the soft beginner friendly Kuppar Bugyal meadow trail and visit the peaceful forest side Giri Ganga Temple
  • Two nights in the Dodra Kwar belt so you actually experience both villages instead of rushing the rough road in one night
  • Overnight Volvo both ways between Delhi and Shimla, then your 4x4 from Shimla to Shimla
  • A small group format because on a route like this, smaller is safer and better
  • For serious offbeat travellers, creators, photographers, and 4x4 lovers who want something far deeper than a regular Himachal trip

Know Before You Go

  • This is a remote 4x4 expedition, not a luxury holiday. Expect long drives, rough mountain roads, simple stays, changing weather, and low network zones. The rawness is the point
  • Travel insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory for this trip. Please arrange it and share proof before departure. A basic fitness and health declaration is also required because the route is remote and medical help is far
  • Chanshal Pass, Dodra, and Kwar movement are completely weather and road dependent. Because Chanshal is crossed both ways, there is a small chance the pass closes behind the group due to weather. If that happens, safety comes first. The team holds the group safely until the road is fit or arranges the safest return. Any genuine extra cost for stay, food, fuel, or a longer route is shared as per the cost policy
  • Keep your return flexible. Do not book a tight onward connection on the morning you reach Delhi because timings can shift with the weather
  • The Dodra Kwar belt stay is basic. Expect simple rooms, simple food, and limited facilities. Best case is one night in Dodra and one in Kwar. If Kwar stay is not suitable, both nights may be in Dodra with Kwar as a day visit
  • The Kuppar Bugyal hike is easy to moderate and optional. You need basic fitness, comfortable shoes, and enough daylight. Skip it and relax at Giri Ganga if you prefer
  • This needs around four working days of leave on a regular week. On selected long weekends, fewer leaves may be needed depending on the calendar
  • Network is weak or unavailable after Rohru and towards Dodra Kwar. Inform your family before entering the belt. Carry warm layers, comfortable shoes, personal medicines, and a valid ID. Pack light
  • The final itinerary may be adjusted on ground for safety, daylight, weather, and road conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a weekend trip?

No. This is a limited batch and private 4x4 expedition. It needs more time because it covers Giri Ganga, Kuppar Bugyal, Pabbar Valley, Chanshal Pass, Dodra, and Kwar properly. Around four working days of leave on a regular week, fewer on selected long weekends.

Why is this an 8 day trip?

Because Dodra and Kwar are two separate villages and the road beyond Chanshal is remote and slow. An 8 day plan gives enough time to reach Dodra safely, explore Kwar properly, and return without rushing the rough section.

Why is this a 4x4 expedition and not a tempo traveller trip?

The route beyond Rohru towards Chanshal Pass, Dodra, and Kwar is rough, narrow, and condition based. A Jimny or Scorpio N 4x4 gives better control, flexibility, and safety. No large tempo traveller movement is planned for this route.

Which vehicle will be used and how many per vehicle?

Jimny or Scorpio N 4x4 depending on group size, luggage, and availability. A Jimny is compact so seating is kept comfortable for an expedition with gear. A Scorpio N seats more. Your exact vehicle and seating are confirmed before departure.

Is Chanshal Pass guaranteed?

No. Reaching or crossing Chanshal depends on road condition, snow, rain, daylight, and local driver approval. If the route is unsafe, the team will not force it and covers the best possible Chanshal approach and Pabbar Valley sightseeing instead.

What happens if Chanshal closes while we are on the Dodra Kwar side?

Safety comes first. The team holds the group safely until the road is fit to cross, or arranges the safest available alternative to return. In a rare case this can mean an extra night or a longer exit route, and any genuine additional cost is shared as per the route and cost policy. This is why insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory and why we ask you to keep your return flexible.

Will we stay in both Dodra and Kwar?

Best case, yes. One night in Dodra and one in Kwar. If Kwar stay is not suitable or available, both nights may be in Dodra with Kwar as a day visit.

What kind of stay is provided in Dodra and Kwar?

A basic homestay. Expect simple rooms, basic washrooms, local food, and limited facilities. This is remote village Himachal, not a hotel.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is mandatory for this trip. Please arrange it and share proof before departure. A basic fitness and health declaration is also required.

Is the Kuppar Bugyal hike difficult?

Easy to moderate, not a hard trek, but you need basic fitness and comfortable shoes. It is also optional. Skip it and relax at Giri Ganga if you prefer.

Is this good for solo travellers?

Yes, if you are comfortable with remote roads, simple stays, and group travel. You can join a flagship departure or form your own private group.

Is this suitable for couples?

Yes, if you are comfortable with basic stays, long drives, and remote travel. Double sharing can be selected where available.

Is this suitable for families?

Not recommended for families wanting comfort and relaxed sightseeing. Families can join only if used to remote mountain travel, long roads, and simple homestays.

What are the meals?

Breakfast and dinner on all 5 stay nights. That is 10 meals. Volvo journey meals, road transfer meals, lunches, and beverages are not included.

What is the best time for this expedition?

Usually late June to September, with early October when the pass holds. We confirm dates only once the pass is open for the year. May and November depend on snow. July and August can be risky due to rain and landslides.

How do the private and flagship formats work?

This runs mainly as a private expedition for your own small group on dates of your choice during the open season. A few flagship departures each season let solo travellers, couples, and small groups join an existing batch. Either way the group stays small because smaller is safer on this route.
