Manali Kaza Chandratal Short Spiti Tour

This is a big day. Arrive in Manali from the overnight bus, freshen up quickly, and start driving immediately. Through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, past Sissu and Gramphu where the road forks towards Spiti. The rough stretch through Chhatru and Batal tests the road but your driver knows every inch of it. Climb over Kunzum Pass at 4,551 metres with prayer flags and panoramic views of both valleys. The landscape changes four or five times on this single drive. Green valley, brown desert, river gorge, snow pass, cold desert. Descend into Spiti and reach Kaza by evening. Check in, have a warm dinner, and rest. From Delhi bus station to Spiti Valley in under 24 hours. One of the most dramatic entries into any valley in India.

After breakfast, head out for the high village circuit. First stop is Langza at 4,400 metres, the fossil village where marine fossils from 450 million years ago lie scattered on the hillsides and a 30 foot golden Buddha statue watches over the entire valley. Next is Hikkim at 4,440 metres, home to the highest post office in the world. Send a postcard to yourself or someone you love. Then Komic at 4,587 metres, one of the highest motorable villages on earth where about 80 people live year round. Visit the ancient Tangyud Monastery. Each village feels different. Langza is open and wide, Hikkim is a single road settlement, Komic is perched on a ridge with nothing but sky around it. Return to Kaza by evening for free time at the market. Fossils, postcards from the sky, and the silence of 4,500 metres.

The day you will not stop talking about. Check out from Kaza and visit Key Monastery, the largest and most photographed monastery in Spiti, a tiered structure over 1,000 years old perched on a hilltop. Walk through prayer halls and ancient chambers. Continue to Kibber village at 4,270 metres, known as a base for snow leopard expeditions with raw mountain beauty and thick silence. Then Chicham Bridge, one of the highest bridges in Asia spanning a gorge so deep it takes a moment for your brain to process the scale. This circuit makes the trip feel like a real Spiti journey, not just a transfer to Chandratal. After Chicham, drive over Kunzum Pass and descend towards the lake. The last stretch from Batal is rough but your driver knows it well. Park and walk 1.5 km to Chandratal at 4,300 metres. Crescent shaped, turquoise water, surrounded by barren peaks. Return to the designated camping zone and settle in. Dinner at camp, then step outside for the Milky Way. Monastery, high village, Asia's highest bridge, and Chandratal, all in one day.

Morning at Chandratal is cold and clear. The lake looks completely different in dawn light. Still, reflective, peaks turning gold. If time allows, take a short walk towards the lake before breakfast. After breakfast, start the return drive through Batal, Chhatru, Gramphu, and back through the Atal Tunnel. Stop for chai and photos wherever the view demands it. Reach Manali by evening and board the overnight Volvo back to Delhi. A complete mini Spiti story wrapped up and heading home.
