Itinerary

Your Christmas trip begins on Wednesday evening from Delhi, with Chandigarh joiners boarding the same vehicle on the way. Meet the group at the pickup point, board the overnight coach to Shimla, and settle in for the ride. This leg runs by Volvo as our first choice, and on some peak-season dates we run it as a Tempo Traveller instead so the whole group travels together from Delhi. We confirm your exact vehicle before departure, and either way the price stays the same. Keep your warm layers and overnight things in a small bag you can reach easily. You travel through the plains while you sleep, and by morning you wake up close to the hills, ready for the drive into Kinnaur.

Know Before You Go

  • This is a fixed Christmas departure, 23 to 27 December 2026, starting and ending at Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla. Seats are limited, so confirm early.
  • Shimla joiners skip the overnight legs: you meet the group at Shimla on the morning of 24 December and are dropped back at Shimla on 26 December.
  • The Delhi and Chandigarh legs run by overnight Volvo as our first choice. On some peak-season dates we run the same Delhi to Shimla journey as a Tempo Traveller instead so the whole group travels together. We confirm your exact vehicle before departure, and either way the price stays the same.
  • Two of the four nights are on the overnight Volvo or Tempo Traveller (to Shimla and back). The two hotel nights are Kalpa and Sangla.
  • The overnight Delhi to Shimla leg takes about 8 to 10 hours, whether on Volvo or Tempo Traveller. Carry a neck pillow, a light blanket and some snacks.
  • Sangla is around 2,621 m, Chitkul around 3,450 m and Kalpa around 2,759 m. Late December is deep winter here, so pack thermals, heavy woollens, a windproof jacket, gloves, a warm cap and insulated waterproof shoes for snow.
  • Expect sub-zero temperatures, sharply so at night. Kalpa and the Baspa Valley around Sangla can fall well below freezing in late December.
  • Winter travel runs on daily road status. Fresh snow can briefly close stretches around Narkanda, Shimla and above Reckong Peo, so keep a buffer and flexible onward tickets.
  • In deep winter the Sangla to Chitkul road is often snow-blocked. On these dates Chitkul and Rakcham are attempted only if the road is open and safe that day. If the higher stretch is closed, the time is spent around Sangla and the Baspa river, and we still keep the Christmas evening and bonfire at the Sangla stay.
  • Homestays and guesthouses have limited heating and timed hot water in winter. Room heaters, where available, are usually chargeable.
  • Mobile network can be patchy in the interior Kinnaur belt. Carry some cash, as ATMs and digital payments are limited beyond the main towns.
  • Carry a valid government photo ID. Kinnaur has notified belts where checks apply, and ID is needed at check-ins.
  • Days start early and drives are paced for safety, since daylight is short and snow slows the roads. On snow days a sturdier vehicle with chains may be used and the route adjusted.
  • Lunches and meals on the overnight journeys are not included. Two breakfasts and two dinners are provided on the stay nights only.
  • Arrival back on 27 December is a morning estimate that depends on traffic and road conditions. Keep onward trains or flights flexible with a comfortable buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the exact dates and where does the trip start?

It is a fixed Christmas departure from 23 to 27 December 2026. You can start and end at Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla. Delhi and Chandigarh include the overnight Volvo or Tempo Traveller, while Shimla joiners meet the group directly at Shimla without the overnight legs. Delhi boards on the evening of 23 December and you arrive back on the morning of 27 December. Your confirmed boarding point and timing come with your booking.

Where do we spend Christmas?

Christmas Eve dinner is with the group in Kalpa on 24 December, below the Kinner Kailash range. The main Christmas celebration, with a bonfire and dinner, is in Sangla on the evening of 25 December, after the day's drive up the Baspa Valley to Rakcham and Chitkul. The exact arrangements come with your booking.

Does 4 nights mean 4 hotel nights?

No. There are two hotel nights, one in Kalpa and one in Sangla. The other two nights are spent travelling on the overnight Volvo or Tempo Traveller between Shimla and Delhi or Chandigarh. Shimla joiners have the two hotel nights only.

Will we definitely reach Chitkul and Rakcham?

They are part of the Christmas Day plan, but late December is deep winter. The Sangla to Chitkul road is often snow-blocked, so we attempt Chitkul and Rakcham only if the road is open and safe that day. If the higher stretch is closed, we spend the time around Sangla and the Baspa river and still keep the Christmas evening and bonfire at the Sangla stay. All mountain roads are condition based.

What vehicle and group size can I expect?

Group sizes run from a Micro batch of 3 to 5 up to a Full batch of 16 to 20. Smaller Micro and Small groups, up to 10, travel by shared SUV, and bigger Social and Full batches, above 10, travel by Tempo Traveller. Room sharing is triple by default, with double available. The Delhi and Chandigarh legs to Shimla and back are by overnight Volvo as our first choice, with a Tempo Traveller on some peak-season dates so the whole group travels together, confirmed before departure.

Is this good for solo travellers?

Yes. You start as strangers and usually leave with a group chat that stays active for weeks. The trip captain makes sure everyone feels included from Day 1. It also works well for couples and friends.

Do we get a trip captain?

Yes. A trip captain and on-ground coordination travel with the group throughout the mountain leg, from Shimla back to Shimla, whatever your batch size.

How cold will it be, and will there be snow?

Expect cold days and sub-zero nights in late December, with a real chance of snow. Carry thermals, heavy woollens, a windproof jacket, gloves and insulated waterproof shoes. Fresh snowfall depends on the weather, so treat it as a welcome bonus rather than a guarantee.

What kind of stays and meals?

A mix of warm standard hotels, homestays and guesthouses depending on the night and location, with clean rooms and proper bedding. Meals follow the MAP plan: breakfast and dinner on the two stay nights, with food from local kitchens. Lunches and overnight-journey meals are not included.
